Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. ---
Charrise Reece made a great steal in the back court and converted the uncontested layup with seven seconds left to give Biola a 51-49 upset victory over No. 12 Azusa Pacific University in a GSAC game at Chase Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
The Eagles snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 13-8 on the season, moving to 5-6 in conference play while dropping the Cougars to 15-6 and to 8-3 in GSAC action.
The Biola defense shined once again, holding the conference's highest scoring team to a season-low 49 points and to just 16% shooting in the pivotal second half. Meanwhile, the offense did just enough to win as the Eagles stormed back after trailing by as many as nine points in the second half and a five-point deficit with 4:36 left.
The Eagles started the late rally with a 10-0 run, scoring on five-straight possessions down the stretch to take a 49-44 lead with 1:13 to play. Azusa Pacific stopped the run and rallied, eventually tying the game at 49-49 on a jumper by Jasmyn Reed--her only bucket of the game.
Biola held for the final possession, but a layup by Reece rattled out and was rebounded by Azusa Pacific's Brianna Hall. However, Reece made up for the miss by picking Hall's pocket in the backcourt and laying up the eventual winning bucket with 7.2 seconds left. Hall had the final attempt on the other end but her jumper missed as time expired.
Adijat Adams tallied 13 points to pace Biola while Chelsea Hill added 10 points in the winning effort. Reece scored nine points and added six assists in the contest. The late steal was the lone one she would record.
Hall led all scorers with 20 points and added five assists and four steals while Amber Williams added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Eagles trailed early in the game 8-3 on a Hall layup with 14:10 left in the half. But Biola responded with an 11-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 14-8 lead at the 8:56 mark. Back-to-back three pointers tied and gave Azusa Pacific a three-point lead four minutes later and the Cougars took a 26-22 lead to the half.
Biola struggled from the field in the opening 20 minutes, hitting just 28.6% while APU connected on 40% of its shots. However, the Eagles defense--which currently ranks second in the NAIA--clamped down big time in the second half, holding the Cougars to just four field goals and a 16% shooting percentage over the final 20 minutes.
The Eagles also turned up the heat inside in the second half, outscoring the Cougars 16-6 in the paint and holding a 23-20 rebounding edge. Overall, Biola out-rebounded the NAIA's fourth-best rebounding team 41-37 with 13 of the Eagles' boards coming on the offensive end.
The final score was the exact same score when the two teams met up in Azusa earlier this season, though the Cougars were the ones that escaped with the two-point victory.
The game was the final GSAC game between the two arch rivals as Azusa Pacific leaves the NAIA and the GSAC at the end of this season. The Cougars had dominated the series over the last 14 years with the Biola victory just the 6th in the last 34 games between the two and the second win at home since 1996.
Biola now hits the road for four of its next five games, starting with a trip to Irvine to face Concordia University in a GSAC clash at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Eagles then travel to GSAC front-runner Westmont College on Tuesday before returning home to face Point Loma Nazarene University on Saturday, Feb. 11.
