Eagles' Offense Silent in Loss at Point Loma

Lauren Gustafson
Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Biola's offense faltered, shooting under 20 percent from the field and finishing with just 31 points in a 54-31 loss at Point Loma Nazarene University in a GSAC game on Saturday night at Golden Gymnasium.

The Eagles (9-6, 2-4 GSAC) connected on just 10 field goals on the night and shot 18.2% from the field in a contest that was tough all around for the visitors.

Lauren Gustafson had four of those made field goals, finishing with 11 points and adding six rebounds in 34 minutes, connecting on three from beyond the three-point arc. She was the lone Eagles in double figures.

The game got off to a slow start for both teams as the score was 8-7 in favor of Point Loma Nazarene (12-6, 3-3 GSAC) before a buckeye by Nyla Bailey with 7:27 left in the period gave one team double-figures for the first time. Biola kept it close from there, trailing by just two at 13-11 on a layup by Haley Nickel with 4:22 to go. But the Sea Lions went on a 10-2 run to stretch the lead to 10 with just under two minutes left and held a 25-15 lead at the break.

Biola was unable to get on the board in the second half until a free throw by Jamie Elias over eight minutes in. By that point, the Sea Lions had extended the lead to 21. The Eagles remained relatively even with Point Loma the rest of the way, but ended up with a tough defeat.

Nyla Bailey led all scorers with 21 points while Crissa Jackson added 11 and Callie Rhoades contributed 10.

Biola did hold a 41-32 rebounding edge and pulled down 18 offensive rebounds in the contest. However, the Eagles were unable to put many of those second-chance shots away either.

The loss was the second-straight for Biola and its fourth in the last five games. The 31 points scored were the fewest scored by the Eagles since the 2000-01 season when Biola lost its season opener 77-30 at Trevecca Nazarene University.

Biola looks to get the offense back on track in its next game, hosting Fresno Pacific University in a GSAC contest on Tuesday (Jan. 17) at 5:30 p.m. in Chase Gymnasium.
