Weststeyn Paces Eagles to Pair of Sweeps at Concordia Tournament

Amy Weststeyn

IRVINE, Calif. --- Freshman Amy Weststeyn recorded 27 kills and 12 blocks to lead Biola to a pair of sweeps on the final day of the 2011 Concordia University Labor Day Festival on Saturday in Irvine.

The Eagles improve to 9-3 on the season with a 25-12, 25-12, 25-19 win over Concordia University (NY) and a 25-21, 25-20, 25-23 win over Cal State San Marcos to close out the tournament.

Weststeyn recorded 18 of her 27 kills in Biola's three-set win over Concordia of New York to open the day. She hit a season-best .517 with 18 kills in 29 swings with just three errors, adding five blocks including two solo.

Fellow middle blocker Chelsee Arnitz had 10 kills on 17 attacks with just two errors to post a .471 attack percentage, adding two blocks of her own.

Biola had little trouble against the Clipper (0-3), cruising to a pair of easy wins in the first two sets, then pulling away late for a 25-19 win in the third.

The Eagles hit .333 in the match while holding Concordia to a .060 attack percentage.

In the second match, Biola faced off against a tough team in Cal State San Marcos, a first-year team which has already beat four ranked teams this year including No. 1 Fresno Pacific on Friday. However, the Eagles put together a solid all-around performance to sweep the upstart Cougars.

Biola got off to a slow start in the first set as Cal State San Marcos jumped out to a 7-3 lead. The Eagles would rally back and eventually tied the score at 16-16. With the score still tied at 20-20, Biola slowly pulled away with a kill by Sarah McAtee and a block by Weststeyn and Christine Douglas.

A kill by the Cougars ended the run, but the Eagles closed out the set thanks to three-straight kills by Douglas to go up 1-0. Biola did not commit an error in the first set, hitting .452 with 14 kills in 31 total attacks. But CSUSM was able to stay close thanks to five aces and solid defense.

In the second set, Biola again fell behind early, trailing by as many as four early on. The Eagles again rallied to tie the score at 16-16, but the Cougars responded with a three-point burst to go up 19-16. After a Biola timeout, the Eagles came alive and rattled off a 9-1 run to close out the match. Justine Schoneveld had a pair of aces during the run and McAtee ended the set with a back-row kill.

The third set started out with the teams going back-and-forth through much of the set, with 11 ties and five lead changes throughout. However, things were oddly like the second set late.

Cal State San Marcos took its largest lead of the set late with a short run to go up 19-16. In a smiliar fashion to the second set, Biola called a timeout and got the ball back after a CSUSM sideout and--this time--started an 8-2 run to go up 24-21. Cal State San Marcos recorded three quick points to make it a 24-23 game, but Nicolette Mather slammed down yet another kill to give the Eagles the win.

Statistically, Biola dominated the match, though the scores showed it to be much closer. The Eagles outhit the Cougars .303 to .145 and held an 11-2 edge in blocking.

McAtee had 12 kills to pace the Eagles with Weststeyn adding nine kills and seven blocks.

Biola returns to the court for its final of four pre-conference tournaments, traveling to San Diego for the Point Loma Nazarene University tournament on Friday and Saturday.
