Biola Wins Two at Concordia Labor Day Classic

Rachel Buckley

IRVINE, Calif. --- Nicolette Mather had a near-perfect match and finished with 23 kills on the day while Rachel Buckley tied a school record with nine blocks as Biola won a pair of matches on the first day of the 2011 Concordia University Labor Day Festival in Irvine on Friday.

The Eagles improve to 8-3 on the season with the wins, beating Westminster College (Utah) 25-12, 25-14, 25-18 and Carroll College 25-14, 25-22, 13-25, 25-12.

Biola dominated the first match and posted some impressive individual numbers. Buckley tied a school record with nine blocks in a three-set match. She already holds the overall record with 12 blocks in a four-set match. Mather recorded 11 kills with no errors in 14 swings, posting a .786 attack percentage. She missed the school record by .006 and was at one point 9-for-9.

Christine Douglas also had a great match with 10 kills and no errors in 20 attempts for a .500 attack percentage. As a team, the Eagles had just four errors with three of those coming in the final set.

Biola opened the match with five-straight points and took a lead of 15-6 midway through the set. The Eagles would not commit their first attack error until late in the set on a close call down the line leading 22-10.

In the second set, Biola again rolled to an early lead, jumping out 7-2 on strong serving by Christian Woodruff. Leading by just four at 14-10, the Eagles broke the set open by scoring 11 of the final 15 points of the contest.

Biola closed out the set with a solid start again in the third, leading 16-7 before a run by Westminster closed the gap a bit to 21-16. The Eagles would stop the run on a service error, then close out the set by exchanging points for the sweep.

Biola held Westminster (0-1) to a .080 attack percentage while swinging at a season-best .411 clip.

After a short break, the Eagles returned to the court and got off to a fast start against Carroll (9-2). Biola opened the first set with a 6-1 lead and held an 17-12 lead through the midway point. But the Eagles closed out the set on an 8-2 run to win the opener.

The second set was a back-and-forth affair Carroll breaking a 12-12 tie with a short 4-1 run and maintaining that edge for the next few points. Trailing 20-17, Biola rallied thanks to strong serving by Woodruff, who led the Eagles with a six-point run to give them a 23-20 lead. Still holding a 23-22 lead, Biola closed out the set with a kill by Sarah McAtee and a block by Chelsee Arnitz.

The Eagles struggled in the third set with a much different lineup than normal as Carroll opened with a 13-5 lead and didn't look back. Biola hit just .156 and couldn't seem to stop the momentum throughout.

But in the fourth set, the Eagles returned to form, dominating early on and cruising to the 25-12 victory.

Mather and Douglas led the way with 12 kills each while McAtee added 10. Woodruff recorded 17 digs and Amy Weststeyn recorded five blocks including two solo.

The Eagles close out the tournament on Saturday, taking on Concordia University (NY) at 9:00 a.m. before facing Cal State San Marcos at 1:00 p.m.
