Biola Splits GSAC Twinbill at Hope International

Jillian Storm

FULLERTON, Calif. --- Leslie Larson hit her first collegiate home run to tie the game and CeCe Luster hit a two-run single to break the game open in the seventh as Biola salvaged a split with Hope International with a 6-3 win in the second game after falling 5-2 in the opener on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles managed to snap a five-game losing streak with the win in game two and are now 22-16 on the season and 3-5 in GSAC play. The Royals improve to 13-20 and 1-7 in the conference.

Larson finished the day going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs on the day.  Jillian Storm added a pair of hits, scored three runs and stole a total of four bases as she continues to lead the NAIA with 44 stolen bases on the season. Luster added four RBIs and a win on the day.

Biola got off to a quick start in the second game after dropping the first. In the second inning, Lyndsie Roberts led off with a single, was moved to second on a single by Kristen Larson and came around to score on a single by Leslie Larson to put Biola up 1-0 early.

After Hope tied the game with a home run in the bottom of the second, Biola came back with a run in the third to take back the lead. Storm got on with an infield single, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.

Lauren Ackerson gave Hope back the lead with a two-run triple in the fourth, but Larson's homer in the fifth tied the score at 3-3.

The score remained tied until the top of the seventh when Biola broke through with three runs. Celina Thornton opened the inning with a single to right and was moved to third with two consecutive sacrifice bunts. The Eagles then took the lead thanks to a Hope error which allowed Thornton to score and Storm to reach first. After stealing second, Storm was moved to third on a single by Gandy. The pair came around to score on a big single to left center by Luster to make it 6-3.

Luster picked up the win in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out four over the final 3-1/3 innings to improve to 8-7 on the season.

Biola continued its recent struggles in the first game of the doubleheader. Hope quickly got on the board as Ackerson led off the home half of the first with a solo home run.

The Eagles answered back with two runs in the top of the third as Luster drove home a pair with a single to right.

But the lead was short lived as pinch-hitter Michelle Rivas cleared the bases with a double to left to make it 5-2.

Biola managed just two hits over the final four innings of the contest and could not muster another comeback.

Lyndsie Roberts suffered the loss and falls to 6-4 on the season.

Biola returns to action on Tuesday (April 5), hosting Azusa Pacific University in a GSAC doubleheader at Freedom Field beginning at 2:00 p.m.
