Luster Leads Biola to Split with No. 4 Concordia

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- CeCe Luster drove home the game's only run and tossed a five-hit shutout as Biola upset No. 4 Concordia University to earn a split in a GSAC doubleheader on Saturday, winning 1-0 after falling 9-3 at Freedom Field.

Biola wraps up the day with a record of 25-23 overall and a mark of 6-10 in GSAC play. Concordia loses for the third time in conference play, falling to 45-6 overall and to 13-3 in the GSAC.

Luster teamed up with senior outfielder Jillian Storm on the only run of the second game. Storm would lead off the frame with a single and moved to second on a throwing error. One out later, Luster singled to left allowing Storm to score just ahead of the throw.

From there, Luster shutdown one of the top hitting teams in the country, allowing just five hits the rest of the way. She worked out of numerous jams in the contest including a tough situation in the third. Concordia would put runners at second and third with one out. But Luster wrapped up the inning with a popout and a flyout.

In the sixth, Concordia's first two batters reached on singles, but a great play by Lyndsie Roberts on a bunt attempt resulted in the third out of the inning at third. Roberts then got back-to-back flyout to end the the threat and the inning. 

Storm finished the first game going 3-for-3, scoring the games only run and collecting three of Biola's four hits. Luster picked up the win to move to 11-9 on the season, walking two batters and striking out five in the game.

Biola put up a strong fight in the first game, but fell behind early. Concordia picked up a run in the second inning, then added three in the third and one more in the fourth to go up 5-0 early. 

Biola cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Luster led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a walk and alertly advanced to third on a flyout. Kristin Larson then drove her home with a single to center to make it 5-1.

In the sixth, Biola closed the gap even more as Luster hit her third home run in as many games and ninth of the season: a two-run shot to make it 5-3.

But Concordia struck back with a four-run top of the seventh to break the game open. The big blow came on a three-run home run by Brieana Eckel.

Luster finished the week going 6-for-12 and had a hand in all eight of Biola's runs scored in its four games. She had three home runs and drove in seven total runs, scoring the lone run she did not drive in.

Biola closes out the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday, hosting Hope International University in a GSAC doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
