CeCe Luster

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Coming off a strong performance earlier in the week against the No. 3 team in the NAIA, Biola wasn't able to duplicate the feat, dropping a pair of games to No. 1 California Baptist by scores of 8-0 and 13-2 on Friday afternoon at Freedom Field.

The Eagles, ranked No. 21 in the NAIA, drop to 21-15 on the season and to 2-4 in GSAC play while the top-ranked Lancers improve to 43-1 and to 6-0 in conference.

Cal Baptist controlled much the first game, pounding out 11 hits and scoring eight runs in the contest. The Lancers got on the board with two runs in the second, using back-to-back run-scoring doubles by Mara Rodriguez and Nicole Schoemaker.

After scoring one in the fourth, CBU scored three run in the fifth capped by a two-run home run by Sloan McHann.

The Lancers added the necessary two runs for the eight-run rule thanks to a two-run double by Shoemaker.

Luster had Biola's two hits in the contest, recording a single in the first and pounding a long single of the right-center field fence in the fourth.

However, the Eagles could not get much else going against Emma Holden, who improved to 21-1 with a two-hit shutout. She struck out seven in five innings.

The Lancers opened the second game with a single by Tina Galinato. After stealing second and moving to third on a ground out, Kendall Gorham drove her in with a single to right.

Biola answered back with a two runs in the bottom of the first. Jillian Storm opened things up with a walk and was moved to third on a bad throw on an attempted sacrifice bunt by Lauren Gandy. Gandy then stole second and the pair was driven in on a single up the middle by Lyndsie Roberts.

Cal Baptist scored three in the top of the second, all with two out. A run-scoring double by April Vasquez tied the game and was followed by an RBI infield single by Tina Galinato and an RBI double by Kendall Gorham to put CBU up 4-2.

The Lancers broke the game open with nine runs in the top of the third inning, taking advantage of five Biola errors to stretch the lead to 13-2.

Luster finished the day by going 3-for-5, collecting three of Biola's six hits on the afternoon.

Biola looks to get back on the winning path on Saturday, traveling to Fullerton to take on Hope International University in a GSAC doubleheader beginning at Noon at Craig Park.
