LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola overcame a four-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth and scored the game-winner in the 10th to secure a sweep over Menlo College by scores of 2-1 and 8-7 in 10 innings in a non-conference doubleheader at Freedom Field on Wednesday.

The Eagles improve to 12-8 on the season with the wins while droppin gthe Oaks to 2-14 overall.

The second game proved to a be a wild affair which Biola fought back twice to win. Menlo got off to an early start with a run in the third and another in the fourth. The Eagles got those two back in the fourth as Shaylynn Weststeyn doubled in CeCe Luster followed by Kristin Larson singling home Lyndsie Roberts to tie the game.

The Eagles added a run in the sixth inning. After loading the bases with two out, Chelsea Lynn was walked to force home the go-ahead run and give Biola a 3-2 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

But the Oaks would rally with some assistance from some shaky Biola defense. After the leadoff batter reached as no one covered first base, the next batter moved the runner to third on an error at short. A walk loaded the bases and Menlo tied the game on a ground out which if handled correctly likely would have resulted in an out at home.

That forced a wild set of extra innings. Biola's Shaylynn Weststeyn, who came into the game in the seventh, got three quick outs without allowing the international tiebreaker run to score. In the bottom of the eighth, the Eagles had a golden opportunity squashed as Weststeyn was thrown out by 10 feet trying to score on a single by Natalie Parker. 

Menlo looked to take control in the ninth, scoring four runs with just two hits. Menlo would load the bases with no one out and score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly. After Westeyn got the second out on a strikeout, it looked the Eagles would get out off the inning with just one run against. But a routine ground ball turned into a nightmare, going through the legs of the first baseman and then was misplayed out in right. Two runs scored on the play with the batter moving to third. A single on the first pitch to the next batter plated the next run making it 7-3 heading to the bottom of the ninth.

Biola rallied, though and matched the score with a four-spot of its own. After scoring the tiebreaker runner on an error, the Eagles still had a mountain to climb with two one but two out. But Roberts came up big, driving a double to deep right to score two. Weststeyn then followed with a single to right which was misplayed by to allow Roberts to score the tying run from second.

Biola's defense came up big in the top of the 10th. Menlo moved the tiebreaker runner to third with one out on a sacrifice bunt, then tried to score her on a ground out to second. But Roberts gunned the runner at home to end the inning with a solid double play.

In the bottom of the inning, Parker moved the tiebreaker runner to third with a sacrifice, then the game mercifully came to an end as Leslie Larson's grounder to short went through the legs of the short stop to give Biola the 8-7 victory.

Weststeyn ended up with the victory to improve to 5-1 on the season. She did not allow an earned run in four innings, scattering just two hits and striking out three. 

Roberts was 4-for-5 in the game with three runs scored and two driven in. 

The first game was a close, one-run affair as well. The Oaks struck first with an unearned run in the first inning. 

Biola struggled to get much going offensively until the fourth inning. Lauren Gandy reached base with a leadoff single up the middle and came around to score as Luster belted a home run to right center field. 

Luster, who came on to pitch in the top of the third, shut down any rally attempts by the Oaks. The only real worry came in the sixth when the Oaks put runners at second and third with one out with a pair of singles and a stolen base. However, Luster got a big strikeout for the second out, then got a ground out to end the inning. 

Luster earned the victory in the game and moved to 4-2 overall. She allowed no runs on three hits over five innings of relief, striking out six.

The doubleheader was the start of a busy week for the Eagles, who play eight games in four days. Biola heads down to San Marcos to play two games as a part of the Cal State San Marcos Cougar Classic on Thursday. The first game is against Dickinson State University (N.D.) at 1:00 p.m. followed by a rematch against the University of British Columbia at 3:00 p.m. The Eagles blew a late lead and lost to UBC at a tournament earlier this season.
