Biola Splits Doubleheader With Bethany

Chelsea Limm

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Freshman Cece Luster drove in five runs including her fifth home run of the season to lead Biola to a 7-1 win in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader against Bethany University at Freedom Field on Saturday. The Eagles lost the second game 4-2 in eight innings.

Biola wraps up the day with a 16-10 record, wrapping up a busy stretch of eight games in four days with a 6-2 record. The Bruins move to 3-7 on the season.

The Eagles started out the day with a solid performance both by the offense and the pitching staff. Luster paced the offensive attack, opening the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning, and following with a two-run double in the second.

Biola added another run in the third as Celina Thornton singled down the left field line to score Natalie Parker with the fifth run of the game.

Meanwhile Lyndsie Roberts was pitching well, allowing just one unearned run on three hits over six innings to pick up the win and improve to 4-3 on the season.

Luster helped tack on a pair of insurance runs late, driving home Jillian Storm with a single, then coming around to score on a single by Shaylynn Weststeyn.

Storm had three stolen bases in the game to give her 34 on the season, breaking the school record of 31 with at least 25 games still to play this season.

In the second game, Biola's offense was held in check, resulting in a close game. The Eagles scored first in the bottom of the first inning with Lyndsie Roberts doubling home Chelsea Limm for the first run of game.

Bethany tied the game in the fifth on a triple by Stephanie Pesqueira--the first of two big triples by her in the game.

Bethany threatened again in the sixth, loading the bases with just one out. Luster came on in relief and slammed the door, though, striking out the next two batters to end the threat.

The score remained tied forcing Biola's sixth extra-inning game of the year. In the eighth, the Bruins would again load the bases with no one out after a single and an error. Luster once again managed to get back-to-back strikeouts for what should have ended the inning. But given an extra out, Bethany broke it open as Pesqueira hit a 3-2 pitch to deep right center, clearing the bases with her second triple and third hit of the game.

Biola was able to get one run back in the eighth as Limm doubled home the tiebreaker runner to start the inning. Luster followed with a double to right, but Limm ran through the stop sign and was gunned at home for the second out. Lyndsie Roberts then flew out to end the game.

Luster took the loss, her second extra-inning defeat, despite not allowing an earned run and striking out seven over 2-2/3 innings.

Limm provided much of the offense in the second game, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Eagles take a much-needed day off before returning to the field on Monday for a doubleheader against Doane College on Monday at 2:00 p.m.
