Conicelli Goes Over 1,500 Career Points as Biola Downs Chapman, 60-46

Jessilyn Conicelli
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Despite an uncharacteristically poor shooting night, Biola was able to pull out a win with a big second half push to defeat Chapman University 60-46 in a non-conference game at Chase Gymnasium on Thursday night.

The Eagles pick up their fifth-straight win and improve to 22-5 on the season while snapping the Panther's seven-game winning-streak and dropping them to 20-5.

In the game, senior forward Jessilyn Conicelli became just the sixth player in program history to score 1,500 points, finishing the game with 16 points and 18 rebounds, with 12 of those boards coming on the offensive glass. It was her 11th-straight double-double and her 21st of the season. She now has 1,501 points in her career to go along with 1,071 rebounds.

Christina Barclay was the only other Biola player in double-digits, scoring all 12 of her points in the second half, hitting 6-of-8 from the field and adding four rebounds.

Biola was hampered with poor shooting all night as the Eagles connected on just 32 percent (24-of-75) of their shots. That was the third-lowest percentage of the season. However, they out-boarded Chapman 48-30 including an impressive 29-5 edge in offensive rebounds. That led to 25 second-chance points for the Eagles.

The game was close throughout the first half. The Eagles held an early 11-5 lead in the first half only to see a quick 6-0 run bring the Panthers back into a tie two minutes later. Chapman took its first lead of the game at the 9:05 mark as Brandi Hood converted a three-point play to make it a 16-14 Panther lead.

Biola went back up by three with 3:16 to go before the break, but the two teams headed to the locker room tied at 22-22. The Eagles wound up shooting just 25 percent (9-of-36) in the first half, but managed to take twice as many shots as Chapman thanks to its big edge on the offensive glass. Biola also forced 15 turnovers in the first half and converted them into 11 points.

Biola wasted no time going on top in the second half thanks to a jumper by Jennifer French and a three-pointer by Charrise Reece, all in the first 1:15. The Eagles extended the lead to seven on back-to-back buckets by French and Barclay to go on top 34-27 with 14:48 left.

Biola still led by seven with 10:00 to go before using an 8-0 run over the next 2:30 to take a commanding 46-31 lead on a three by Becca DeVere. The Panthers answered back immediately with a 10-1 run of their own to make it a 47-41 game with 5:00 to play. But the Eagles slowly pulled away thanks to a pair of baskets by Barclay and a key runner in the lane by Reece.

Biola shot a bit better in the half, hitting 38.5 percent, but turned up the heat on defense. After allowing the Panthers to shoot 50 percent in the first, the Eagles held Chapman to 35.3 percent in the second half. Biola also forced 13 turnovers in the final 20 minutes, converting them into 20 points.

Hood led the Panthers with 13 points, adding eight rebounds and a steal. Simone Ibbotson scored eight and also pulled down eight boards for Chapman.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday, hosting Concordia University in a GSAC game at 5:30 p.m.
