FRESNO, Calif. ---
Jessilyn Conicelli scored 16 points and added 13 rebounds and the Biola defense allowed the fewest points of the season in a 59-43 GSAC victory at Fresno Pacific University on Tuesday night.
The Eagles pick up their fourth-straight win to improve to 21-5 and stay in a tie for second in the conference with a 13-4 GSAC record. The Sunbirds drop to 8-19 on the season and to 1-16 in conference play.
Conicelli led the Eagles' offense with her 10th-straight double-double and her 20th of the season. She scored 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting, adding three assists in just 28 minutes.
Christina Barclay added 12 points, seven rebounds and three blocks with
Jennifer French contributing 10 points to the winning effort.
But the real story was the defense, which held Fresno Pacific to just 23.6 percent shooting in the contest and just 4-of-23 (17.6 percent) shooting from beyond the three-point stripe.
Both teams got out to a slow start in the contest with Fresno Pacific holding a 6-2 lead nearly 5:30 into the contest. But the Eagles held the Sunbirds without a field goal over the next five minutes and built up a 14-6 lead during that time. Biola stretched the lead up to 15 as
Adijat Adams hit a layup to make it a 25-10 game 4:53 left.
The Sunbirds closed the gap with a late run but still trailed 31-22 at the half.
In the second, the Biola lead stayed around 10 points with Fresno Pacific cutting the lead to eight at 42-34 with 12:17 to go. But the Eagles with a 17-2 run started by back-to-back buckets by Barclay to put the game out of reach.
Jessica Torrecillas led all scorers with 19 points for the Sunbirds.
Biola returns to action on Thursday for a non-conference game against cross-town foe Chapman University. The game will be part of the national cancer awareness week with the women's team wearing special pink uniforms to help the cause. Fans are encouraged to donate to help support the cause instead of paying admission to the game.
