Biola Wraps Up Regular Season with Sweep at The Master's

Douglas has banner night with 15 kills and .700 attack percentage

Christine Douglas

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- Junior Christine Douglas had a monster night, recording 15 kills with just one error in 20 attacks for a .700 attack percentage to lead Biola to a 25-16, 25-17, 25-20 win over The Master's College in the season-finale for both teams on Saturday night at Bross Gym.

The Eagles close out the regular season with a record of 23-12 and finish tied for fourth with a 10-8 conference mark. The Mustangs wrap up the year with a 19-14 record and a 7-11 record in GSAC play.

Douglas' attack numbers were her best this season and up in the top 10 single-match performances at Biola since rally scoring began. But she was not alone as fellow junior Rachel Buckley recorded seven kills in 11 swings with no errors for a .636 attack percentage. She also added three blocks including one solo.

The Eagles got off to a strong start in the first set. The game opened up with a bit of a back-and-forth flare, but Biola used a 12-1 run to break open a one-point game and take a 24-12 lead. The Eagles would hold on for the 25-16 lead and go up 1-0.

The second set saw Biola opend a 7-2 lead in the early going only to see The Master's respond with a short run to tie the score at 9-9. After the teams exchanged points, the Eagles started to pull away at the midway point again, going on a long 14-5 run to set up game point and won 25-17.

The final set stayed close throughout and featured 13 ties and seven lead changes. With the score knotted at 19-19, Douglas slammed a big kill to give Biola a 20-19 lead. That was followed by a block from Douglas and Amy Weststeyn and a TMC attack error as the Eagles went up 22-19. The Master's would get a kill to close to within one, but back-to-back kills by Weststeyn and Douglas set up match point and a tough serve by Emily Weingartner led to a Mustangs' ball handling error and the win.

The Eagles hit an even .300 in the match and had seven blocks while holding The Master's to a .155 attack percentage.

Biola will now await word on an at-large berth to the NAIA Tournament--a foregone conclusion with the Eagles ranked No. 13 in the latest NAIA National Poll. Biola is right on the edge as to whether it will play an Opening Round match or receive a bye and advance directly to the NAIA Tournament Final Site in Sioux City, Iowa.

The top 11 teams and the host school earn a bye in the NAIA Opening Round matches while the remaining 24 teams will play in 12 Opening Round matches on Saturday, Nov. 19 at campus sites across the country. The winners of those matches fill out the final 12 spots at the NAIA Tournament. The 36-team field is announced on Sunday afternoon.
