LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola put up a strong showing against No. 5 Lewis-Clark State, but poor shooting in the second half allowed the Warriors to escape Chase Gymnasium with a 66-55 win in the Eagles' home opener on Friday night.
Biola suffers its first loss on the season, falling to 2-1 overall, while the fifth-ranked Warriors move to 3-0.
A trio of Eagles each scored 13 points to lead the way. Senior guards Emily Drews and Lauren Gustafson each tallied 13 with Gustafson adding six rebounds and two steals while Drews had three steals a block, two assists and four rebounds. Freshman center Cheslea Hill also had 13 points with a steal and three rebounds.
Biola had a great first half, opening up a 10-point lead at 22-12 just over nine minutes into the contest. The Eagles continued to lead by as many nine as an off-balance jumper by Charrise Reece put Biola up 26-17 with 7:08 to go. But the Eagles went cold after that and the Warriors rattled off a 13-2 run over the next six minure and the teams headed to the half knotted at 30-30.
Biola host 40 percent in the first half, hitting 12-of-30 from the field while holding Lewis-Clark State to 8-of-22 shooting for 36.4 percent. However, things changed drastically in the second half.
The Warriors came out firing and scored the first nine points of the period to build up a 39-30 lead at the 16:25 mark. Biola would get close just after the midway point, using a 7-0 run to cut the lead to four at 48-44 with 9:03 to go. But LCSC quickly extended the lead back to nine and would not allow Biola any closer than seven the rest of the way.
The Eagles were only able to hit 7-of-39 in the second period (17.9 percent) while the Warriors connected on 63.6 percent, 14-of-22 over the final 20 minutes. Biola managed to stay close thanks to a huge edge on the offensive glass, out-rebounding the visitors 24-10 on the offensive end. Despite that edge, the Eagles were only able to muster nine second-chance points.
Jasmine Stohr led all scorers with 23 points--one over her season average--and added three assists. Kirsi Vishell came off the bench to score 13 points and added four steals.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday, hosting cross-town foe Whittier College in a non-conference game at 7:00 p.m.
