Biola Rallies Back But Falls in Five at No. 2 Concordia

Gracee Gallarda

IRVINE, Calif. --- For the second time this season, Biola battled back from a two-set deficit to force a fifth set against No. 2 Concordia. But, for the second time this season, Concordia prevailed by two points in the deciding set, this time winning 25-16, 25-14, 20-25, 26-28, 15-13 in a GSAC match on Saturday night.

Biola, ranked No. 14 in the latest NAIA National Poll, drops to 19-10 and to 6-6 in GSAC play while Concordia picks up its 24th-straight win to move to 24-1 and remains perfect at 12-0 in the conference.

Christine Douglas paced Biola's attack with 18 kills and a career-best nine blocks. Rachel Buckley added seven kills, 11 assists and eight blocks including one solo.

Biola got off to a slow start as Concordia dominated the first two sets. Concordia opened a 12-3 lead in the first set and cruised from there, then started with a 10-1 edge in the second set before wrapping things up easily to go up 2-0 in the match.

But Biola awoke in the third set, opening on a 9-4 run and holding a 24-15 edge before Concordia made things interesting with a short run near the end. However, a block by Sarah McAtee and Amy Weststeyn ended the rally with Biola taking the set 25-20.

In the fourth set, things went back and forth until Biola broke a 16-16 tie with a 5-1 run to take what looked like a 21-17 lead. But Concordia responded with a 7-1 run which included four kills by Brooke Marino take set up match point at 24-22. Biola fought off those two points and extended the set, eventually picking up a big block by Nicolette Mather and Buckley to win 28-26 and tie the match at 2-2.

In the fifth, the two teams opeend with a close back and forth play again with Concordia taking a slight 8-7 edge at the change-over. Biola would tie on a kill by Weststeyn, but Concordia answered back with three-straight points to give the home team an 11-8 lead. Biola would get another big block and a kill by Christine Douglas and before too long, tied the score at 12-12. But Fei Gao and Reanna Schelhass recorded back-to-back kills to put Concordia back on top 14-12 and despite another kill by Douglas to kill off another set point, Concordia would close it out with a kill by Schelhass for the win.

Biola matched a season-high 17 blocks in the match, a mark equalled when these two teams met earlier in the season in La Mirada. Douglas led the way with nine blocks--one of seven Biola players to record a block.

Sophomore Gracee Gallarda led Biola in a pair of categories, recording 20 digs and 23 assists on the night.

Saturday's match was the first of three-straight for Biola against NAIA Top 10 teams. The Eagles return home to face No. 7 Azusa Pacific University on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The match will be the final GSAC match between the two long-time rivals as the Cougars move to the NCAA Division II ranks next year.
