Jessilyn Conicelli recorded her 13th double-double of the season with a 14-point, 17-rebound performance as No. 7 Biola defeated Point Loma Nazarene University 69-48 in a GSAC game on Thursday night.
The victory for the Eagles (16-3, 8-2 GSAC) was just their second time in their last 12 regular-season trips to Point Loma.
Conicelli's double-double paced the Biola attack, especially in the pivotal second half in which she scored 10 of her 14 points and pulled down 11 of her 17 rebounds. The senior upped her season rebounding average to 12.2 per game, which ranks third in the NAIA.
Senior forward
Jennifer French added 14 points for the Eagles including connecting on four three-pointers. Junior guard
Lauren Gustafson scored a season-high 12 points with nine of them coming in the first half to help keep Biola in the contest early.
In the first half, the Sea Lions (8-8, 3-5 GSAC) jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead in the first two minutes of the contest. Three-straight three-pointers--two from French--capped a 14-5 run which tied the game at 14-14 six minutes later.
The Eagles took their first lead on a jumper by
Emily Drews at the 7:12 mark which made it 22-20 and started an 11-3 Biola run. The Eagles would take a 34-29 lead to the half.
In the second, Biola got a quick bucket by Conicelli and a three-pointer by French to take its biggest lead of the contest to that point a 39-29. After the Sea Lions closed to within five at 42-37 with 15 minutes left, Biola started to figure things out, rattling off a 14-0 run over the next five minutes to put the game out of reach.
The Eagles struggled to stop the Sea Lions in the first half as the home side hit over 40 percent in the opening 20 minutes. However, Biola clamped down in the second and held Pt. Loma to just six field goals in the final 20 minutes. PLNU would finish by hitting 36 percent on the night and scoring its second-lowest point total of the year.
Drews had a solid first half, scoring 10 of her 11 points in the opening stanza. She also had six steals and six rebounds for Biola.
Crissa Jackson led the Sea Lions with 16 points.
Biola opens the second half of GSAC play with a brutal stretch, playing the other four Top 25 teams in the GSAC in consecutive games. First up is a trip to Santa Barbara, where the Eagles face No. 24 Westmont at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday night. On Saturday, Biola returns home for a huge showdown against No. 6 and current GSAC leader California Baptist at Chase Gymnasium.
