LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola finally got the combination of strong pitching and great hitting it had been looking for all year, defeating Cal State San Marcos 15-2 in a non-conference game Monday on Eagles Diamond.
The Eagles snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 22-16 on the season while dropping the Cougars to 29-13-1.
While the offense has been relatively consistent all season for Biola, it's been the pitching that has struggled. Injuries have depleted the staff and forced the Eagles to look for pitchers elsewhere. Today's starter was one of those finds.
Sophomore
Phil Blazek started the year among a group of players in the outfield but moved to the mound midway through the season. On Monday, Blazek had the best start of the year so far, allowing five hits over six shutout innings to pick up his first collegiate victory. He threw a respectable 71 pitches and recorded a pair of strikeouts.
On offense, the Eagles pounded out 22 hits and matched a season-high with five home runs in the game.
Biola got the ball rolling early as
Boone Farrington and
Garrett Leon opened the game with a single and a double, respectively.
Vinnie Fayard than drove them both home with a single to make it 2-0 early.
In the second, the Eagles tacked on two more runs on RBI singles by
Mike Lopez and Leon. They would add a couple more in the third on a two-run home run by
Armando Arzate to go up 6-0.
Leon would lead off the fourth inning with a solo home run to put Biola up 7-0 and leave himself just a triple short of the cycle. The Eagles would then blow the game wide open with four run in the fifth.
Mac Sullivan led off the frame with a solo home run to dead center field. After a single by Arzate,
Christopher Neal followed with a two-run home run. Biola would add one more run on an RBI-single by Trevor Blood.
The Eagles would tally three runs in the sixth. Lopez capped a 4-for-4 day with an RBI-double to account for the first while Farrington added to the home run derby with a two-run shot to left center.
Biola would cap the scoring with a run on a double play in the seventh.
Cal State San Marcos would score its lone runs in the top of the eighth, but managed just nine hits overall.
Lopez had a career day with four hits in as many at-bats, recording a double and driving in two runs. Fayard, Biola's home run leader, did not add to his total, but did go 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
Farrington and Leon each went 3-for-5 with a home run at the top of the Biola lineup with each adding two runs scored and two RBIs.
Biola has just eight games remaining on the regular season schedule and all are conference games. The first two come on Wednesday (Apr. 21) as the Eagles welcome Fresno Pacific University to Eagles Diamond for a midweek doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
