Roberts Picks Up Two Wins, Grand Slam in Biola Sweep of Hope International

Roberts and Kristin Larson combine for no-hitter in game two

Lyndsie Roberts

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Junior pitcher Lyndsie Roberts belted a grand slam to help her cause and combined with Kristin Larson on a no-hitter in the second game as Biola swept a GSAC doubleheader with Hope International University by identical 6-0 scores at Freedom Field on Thursday.

The Eagles snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 10-6 on the season and to 2-2 in GSAC play. The Royals drop to 6-8 and to 0-4 in the conference.

Roberts was the star of the day for Biola, doing just about everything to help her team to a pair of victories. In the first game, the junior allowed just two hits and recorded four strikeouts for a complete-game shutout victory.

In the second game, Roberts tossed the first four innings of a no-hitter before Kristin Larson, who had been nursing a minor injury, entered the game to close out the no-no with three strong innings.

Roberts also hit a first-inning grand slam to help her cause, blasting a homer to dead center field to cap a five-run first. Krista Johnson helped out with the other run, driving home Jillian Storm with a single earlier in the inning.

From there, Roberts was near spotless, allowing one batter to reach on an error an hitting another batter, both in the second inning. However, she worked out of that jam with a double play and retired the next six batters with little trouble.

Larson then came on in relief and despite a bit of wildness, was able to secure the save and keep the no-hitter intact. She walked four batters over the final three innings and hit one batter, but managed to get a pair of double plays and clutch outs to minimize the damage.

In the first game, Johnson provided the fireworks offensively. Johnson opened the scoring with a solo shot to lead off second inning, then drove home runs two and three with a two-run single in the fourth. Biola would add a pair of unearned runs in the fifth and Roberts capped the scoring in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to plate Morgan Facchini, who led off with a double.

Roberts allowed a single to the first batter of the game but did not allow another hit until the sixth, retiring 11-straight batters at one point.

The pair of victories improves Roberts' record to 6-3 on the season. Larson picked up her third save with her three innings of relief in game two.

Lauren Gandy also had a good offensive showing, going 4-of-5 in the doubleheader with an RBI and two runs scored. She also made a number of great defensive plays in the games. Facchini went 3-for-5 on the day and Johnson was 3-for-6 overall to pace the Biola attack.

Biola hits the road for its next GSAC games, facing No. 1 California Baptist in Riverside on Tuesday (March 9). The doubleheader begins at 4:00 p.m.
