LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Five Biola players reached double-figures in scoring led by junior forward
Jessilyn Conicelli's 18 points in an 82-60 victory over California Baptist University in a GSAC game on Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium.
The Eagles, ranked No. 21 in the latest NAIA National Rankings, improve to 18-10 and to 13-6 in conference play thanks to their fifth win in their last six games. The 13 GSAC victories are the most by Biola since joining the conference for the 1994-95 season. The Lancers drop to 12-17, 5-14 in the GSAC.
Conicelli helped pace Biola with another solid performance, picking up her 13th double-double of the season and fifth in as many games with 18 points and 14 rebounds. She also had two blocks, two steals, six assists and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Senior guard
Chelsea De Luca made the most of her final regular-season home game at Chase Gymnasium, scoring 16 points to give her exactly 600 in her Biola career. De Luca was 6-of-11 from the field and 4-of-8 from three-point range.
Junior post
Christina Barclay added 12 points for the Eagles with
Jennifer French adding 11 and
Charrise Reece contributing 10.
The Eagles got off to a bit of a rocky start as Cal Baptist came out firing early. The Lancers opened a 14-6 lead just under four minutes into the game, connecting on four of their first five three-point attempts. Cal Baptist would record six treys in the first half, the final coming at the 8:55 mark to give the visitors a 24-22 lead.
But that proved to be the final field goal the Lancers would make in the half and the start of a monster 41-10 run over the next 20-1/2 minutes of the game. Biola would cap the run with a pair of free throws by senior
Richae Kater to take its biggest lead of the game at 63-34.
California Baptist fought back a bit and closed the gap to as few as 15 on a Rachel McDaniel layup with 4:30 to go, making it a 71-56 ball game. However, Biola played tough defense down the stretch, holding the Lancers to just four points the rest of the way to nail down the victory.
Biola had a strong night from the field, shooting 49 percent (30-of-67) including 48 percent from three-point range (10-of-21). The 10 three-point baskets were the most in a game since just before Thanksgiving and give the Eagles 19 in their last two games. Meanwhile, Biola held the Lancers to just 37.5 percent shooting and just one three-pointer in eight second-half attempts.
Brenna Hahn led all scorers with 24 points for the Lancers--15 in the first half--connecting on 8-of-17 from the field including 3-of-8 from three-point range. Megan Bradford contributed 16 points.
The Eagles close out the regular season on Monday (Mar. 1), traveling to face Hope International University at Darling Pavilion in Fullerton. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
