Biola Upset by Concordia 67-66 in Overtime

French scored game-high 28 points in loss

Jennifer French

IRVINE, Calif. --- Despite a season-high 28 points from junior forward Jennifer French, Biola missed a number of opportunities in what should have been an easy win, falling to Concordia 67-66 in overtime in a GSAC game on Saturday night at CU Arena.

Biola, ranked No. 19 in the latest NAIA National Rankings, drops to 16-10 on the season and to 11-6 in conference play. Concordia picks up its fourth GSAC victory to move to 4-13 and improves to 11-14 overall.

French had an impressive game, going 11-of-21 from the field including 3-of-7 from three point range to record 28 points. She also had six rebounds, four blocks, three assists and a pair of steals.

However, Biola shot just 38.8 percent in the game--32 percent if you take away French's numbers--and managed just one field goal in seven attempts in the extra period.

Biola missed a number of chances to seal the game in the final minutes of regulation and in overtime. Chelsea De Luca managed to give Biola a one-point lead, capping a five-point run to make it 60-59 with 2:59 to go. But the Eagles would make just one of their final six shots in regulation with the make coming from Jessilyn Conicelli, whose layup gave Biola a 62-61 lead with 34 seconds left.

But Biola allowed an offensive rebound after a Concordia miss and a foul sent Nicole Fu to the line. Fu made the second of the two free throws to tie the game and a last-second shot by Charisse Reece missed as time expired to send the game to OT.

In the extra session, Biola got on the board first with a basket by French at the 3:36 mark only to see Fu answer with a bucket on the other end. A turnover and foul on the other end sent Fu back to the charity stripe where she again hit just one of two shots to put Concordia up one with 2:49 to play. Biola turned the ball over on its next two possessions and while the first didn't hurt them, the second led to a Tyler Howard jumper in the paint to put the home side up three.

Howard then fouled De Luca on the other end and the senior converted both free throws to again make it a one-point game with just over one minute remaining. But neither team would score the rest of the way.

Both teams missed open shots on their next two possessions, but it looked like Biola might have a shot to at least tie as French was fouled with 25 seconds left. However, she missed the front end of the one-and-one and Concordia took the ball back. Instead of fouling, Biola stepped up the defense and forced a turnover with 12 seconds left  to have one final chance at the win. But Reece missed a three-pointer and Conicelli's putback attempt was blocked by Karen Carney as time expired to seal the Concordia win.

Conicelli had another solid game inside for Biola, picking up her 11th double-double of the season with 17 points and 14 rebounds. However, she hit just 6-of-16 from the field in the game as the Concordia defense frustrated the all-conference forward.

Lyndsey Kingsland led Concordia with 15 points while Britnie Priest added 14 and Fu scored 13.

Concordia's biggest advantage came off turnovers, outscoring Biola 28-19 in points off turnovers despite both schools committing 21 in the game. Concordia also became one of the few schools to outrebound Biola, edging the visitors 47-42 including a 21-16 edge on the offensive glass.

The loss drops Biola out of the mix at the top of the conference as the Eagles now trail third-place Point Loma Nazarene by three games in the GSAC standings. The loss could also put Biola in a precarious position in the NAIA Tournament playoff picture as the Eagles will likely drop a bit in the NAIA rankings.

More importantly, Biola is now just one game ahead of fifth-place The Master's College with a huge game between the two looming on Tuesday (Feb. 23) up in Santa Clarita. If the Eagles can right the ship and knock off the Mustangs on Tuesday, they can pretty much cinch up the fourth spot in the conference standings and have a much better shot of making it to the NAIA tournament. Tuesday's game up at The Master's tips off at 5:30 p.m.
