SIOUX CITY, Iowa --- What started out as a great match quickly deteriorated as California Baptist used a 26-2 run over the course of two sets to sweep past Biola in the final match of pool play for both teams at the 2010 NAIA National Championships on Thursday afternoon.
The Eagles fall to 27-9 on the season and finish second in Pool F with a 2-1 record in pool play. The Lancers win the pool with a perfect 3-0 record and improve to 32-5 on the season.
Biola advances out of pool play despite the loss and will face another GSAC foe in the first round of bracket play. The Eagles will take on Concordia University at 12:30 p.m. (CST) with the winner advancing to the NAIA Quarterfinals to face Texas-Brownsville at 8:00 p.m. (CST).
Cal Baptist got off to a quick start in the match, winning the first set by a count of 25-17. The Lancers opened up with a 12-7 lead only to see the Eagles close the gap quick to 14-13 with a 7-1 run. But Cal Baptist came right back and outscored Biola 11-4 the rest of the way to take the first set.
In the second, everything was going the Eagles' way. Biola opened up an early 10-5 lead, then later used a 5-1 run to take a commanding 20-12 lead. But that's when the wheels came off. The Lancers answered back with a 13-1 run to shock the Eagles and take the second set 25-21. Biola would commit nine errors over the final 14 points of the set as the Lancers came roaring back.
Cal Baptist continued the run to start the third, opening up a 13-1 run early on. Biola would work out of its funk enough to close the gap a bit, but still lost the third set 25-21.
Christine Douglas paced the Eagles with nine kills and was one of only two hitters above .100 for Biola.
Ingrid Carmona had 18 kills to lead Cal Baptist, recording 15 in the first two sets.
