Biola Heads North to Face Arch-Rival Azusa Pacific Tonight

Azusa Pacific vs Biola Tonight!
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola men's and women's basketball teams return to GSAC play on Tuesday night with a huge pair of games, facing arch-rival Azusa Pacific University at the Felix Event Center. The women's game begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the game game are available at the Felix Event Center Box Office and are $5 for adults, $3 for students.

The women's team enters the game with a 6-5 record, having won three-straight games including a dominating victory over Black Hills State University on Thursday, a team ranked No. 5 in the latest NAIA Division II poll. The Eagles have had great success so far in the GSAC, going 2-1 including an 81-72 win over then-No. 2 and undefeated Point Loma Nazarene.

Biola has lost five games thus far, but four of those five have come against teams ranked in the NAIA Top 10 at the time, including the first three of the season in a tough tournament in Tennessee.

Azusa Pacific holds a slight 38-33 lead in the all-time series, but has won 23 of the last 27 meetings between the two. The Eagles picked up their first win over the Cougars since the 2005-06 season with a 61-56 victory at home last year. However, they lost 68-66 on a very controversial foul called with under one second left in the game at APU, then fell 61-56 in the first round of the GSAC playoffs in Azusa.

Juniors forwards Jessilyn Conicelli and Jennifer French are leading Biola this season. Conicelli leads the GSAC in rebounding with 9.7 boards per game and is ninth in scoring at 14.5 points per contest. French is also having a strong season, averaging 13.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.3 assists per game.

On the other side of the ball, the Eagles will have to contend with junior Alex Moore-Porter, who has averaged 22.4 points in seven games after missing the first six due to an injury. The junior put up an impressive 34 points in Azusa's two-point victory over Concordia on Saturday.

The Biola men's team is off to the fourth-best start in school history at 13-0 and will be looking to keep that going with a victory over the Cougars tonight. The Eagles, who are ranked No. 5 in the NAIA right now, are already 3-0 in GSAC play, including a 61-49 victory over then-No. 3 Fresno Pacific University in early December.

Biola trails the all-time series 49-44, but has won two of the last three games including a dominating 76-54 victory in Azusa when the two last met. In that game, the Eagles came storming out of the gate, taking a 16-5 lead seven minutes in. They would lead by 11 at the half and as many as 26 in the game before the stunned crowd of nearly 2,600 at the Felix Event Center.

This season, Biola has been led the strong inside play of senior forward Rocky Hampton, who is averaging 14.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per contest. However, he is one of six players averaging at least 7.7 points per game this season as the Eagles have one of their deepest and most balanced teams in recent memory.

Azusa Pacific has been struggling a bit, falling out of the NAIA Top 25 for the first time in quite a while and entering tonight's game with an 8-5 record and a 1-2 mark in conference play. The Cougars lost 86-68 to No. 2 Concordia University on Saturday, snapping a three-game winning streak.

Dominique and Marshall Johnson (no relation) lead the Cougars' offense. Dominique is averaging 16.7 points per game for APU including posting an eye-popping 33 points against Concordia on Saturday, while Marshall is averaging 12.2 ppg.
