SAN DIEGO --- Biola had one of its worst shooting nights of the season, hitting just 29 percent from the field, seeing its six-game winning streak come to an end in a 62-52 loss at No. 2 Point Loma Nazarene in a GSAC game on Thursday night.
The Eagles, ranked No. 21 in the latest NAIA national rankings, drop to 12-7 on the season and to 8-3 in conference play while the Sea Lions improve to 19-1 overall and to 10-1 in GSAC play.
The Point Loma Nazarene victory was a measure of revenge against the lone team to defeat them. Biola knocked off the Sea Lions 81-72 in La Mirada earlier this year.
Senior guard
Elise Paty had a season-high 15 points off the bench--all coming from beyond the three-point line--to lead Biola. Fellow senior guard
Chelsea De Luca was the lone starter in double-figures, recording 12 points for the Eagles.
But the real story was the shooting, not just by Biola, but also by Point Loma. The Eagles finished by hitting just 29 percent from the field--the second-lowest mark of the season by a few fractions of a percent. However, the Sea Lions did not fare much better, hitting just 32.2 percent. In the key second half, Biola hit just 8-of-31 from the field (25.8 percent) with half of the made field goals were from three-point land.
In the first half, both teams got off to a slow start, though Point Loma held a slight four-point lead at 13-9 with 10:41 to go. Biola took the lead right back with back-to-back three-pointers by Paty to go up 15-13 and led by three at 20-17 with just over five minutes left. But the Sea Lions closed out the half with a 12-5 run to head to the locker room with a 29-25 lead.
In the second half, De Luca connected on a pair of early treys to bring the Eagles back to a tie at 31-31.
Jessilyn Conicelli's layup at the 15:06 work gave Biola what would turn out to be it's last lead at 35-33 as Point Loma came right back with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to go up by eight.
The Eagles would chip away at the lead and pull back within four near the 10 minute mark only to see the Sea Lions roll off a 9-0 run to take a commanding 13-point lead with just under seven minutes left. Biola would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way as Paty ended the game with a deep three.
In addition to poor shooting, Biola struggled to take care off the ball, turning it over 20 times which the Sea Lions turned into 25 points on the other end.
2008-09 GSAC Player of the Year Colleen Planeta scored a game-high 21 points, the most against the Eagles in nearly three seasons. Amanda Franz added 19 points for the Sea Lions.
Point Loma did a good job of handling Biola's strong inside game. Junior forward
Jessilyn Conicelli had a game-high 14 rebounds, but was held to just eight points on 3-of-14 shooting. Biola's second-leading scorer,
Jennifer French, also had a tough shooting night, finishing with two points on 1-of-8 shooting.
While the loss was the seventh of the season for the Eagles, all of them have come against teams ranked in the Top 15 of their respective classifications. Six of those losses have come to teams in the NAIA Top 15 while the other came against UC San Diego, a team ranked No. 14 in NCAA Division II.
The Eagles have Saturday off before returning to action on Tuesday (Feb. 1), heading up to Fresno Pacific for a GSAC game at 5:30 p.m
