LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola overcame a late six-point deficit by scoring 13 of the final 15 points, winning a key GSAC game 67-62 over The Master's College on Tuesday night at Chase Gymnasium.
The win moves the Eagles to 10-6 overall and 6-2 in conference play with their seventh win in their last eight games. The Mustangs fall to 10-6 and to 5-3 in the GSAC.
Biola capped a thrilling game with a strong finish, overcoming a 60-54 deficit with 5:14 left. After trailing throughout most of the game, The Master's took the lead back with 11:10 to go in the contest. They expanded the lead to as many as seven at 55-48 with the 7:31 mark and took a six-points lead on a three-pointer by Jenna Reed.
But the Eagles did not go quietly into the night. Biola closed the gap to four on a putback by
Christina Barclay on the next possession, and after a turnover by the Mustangs on the other end,
Charrise Reece came back down and drained a three-pointer from the pull Biola within one. The Eagles took the lead back after a missed shot by The Master's and another putback buckey by Barclay.
From that point on, Biola played impressive defense and converted all six of its free throw attempts down the stretch to wrap up the victory.
Junior forward
Jessilyn Conicelli recorded her sixth double-double of the season, scoring 22 points and adding 14 rebounds, connecting on 9-of-13 from the field in the game. Barclay also added her second double-double by scoring 12 points and adding 11 rebounds despite playing just eight minutes in the first half due to foul trouble.
Reece added 12 points adding five steals, two rebounds and two assists.
In the first half, Biola started strong, breaking an 8-8 tie with a 12-3 run capped by back-to-back three-pointers by
Chelsea De Luca and
Jennifer French. However, Biola went quiet from there and The Master's slowly worked back into the game, eventually tying it at 28-28 on a layup by Erica Inge with 1:44 to go before the half.
But Reece came right back down on the other end and drained a three-pointer to snatch the lead right back. The Eagles would play strong defense and head to the half with a two-point lead.
In the second, the two teams fought back and forth over the first 10 minutes of the half with The Master's pulling close and Biola pulling back out in front. But the Mustangs took their first lead since early in the first half with an 8-0 run which put them up 47-43 at the 10:36 mark. The Master's would stretch its lead to seven on a jumper by Reed with 7:31 left.
Elise Paty closed the gap to three on a nice layup and nearly tied the score on a three-pointer which rattled in and out with 5:30 left. Reed appeared to put nail in the coffin with 5:17 left, hitting a straight-away three-pointer to stretch it back to three.
From there, Biola played fantastic defense, forcing three turnovers and allowing The Master's to hit just 1-of-5 shots over the final five minutes. The Eagles helped their cause by pulling down eight rebounds including five on the offensive glass in the closing minutes. The biggest play came with Biola clinging to a slim three-point lead with under 10 seconds left as French stepped right in front of a pass to end the threat and give the Eagles the win.
Brittany Henderson led the Mustangs with 17 points with six rebounds, five blocks and a steal before fouling out late in the game.
Jenna Reed added 12 points for The Master's while Lena Rivera recorded 11 points.
Biola returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 23), traveling to Riverside to take on California Baptist University in a GSAC game at 5:30 p.m.
