BOX SCORE
LA MIRADA, Calif---Senior midfielder
Bethany Wikfors and junior forward
Sam David each scored in the second half as Biola edged the Academy of Art 2-0 Monday afternoon in its home opener on Al Barbour Field.
The victory improves the Eagles to 1-0-1 on the season and drops the Urban Knights to 0-4-0.
In addition to the offense, sophomore goal keeper
Erin Frushon was perfect, needing just two saves to record the clean sheet.
Despite registering seven shots in the first half, Biola did not capitalize on any opportunities but limited the Urban Knights to just a pair of shots.
At the start of the second half, the Eagles attacked the goal on numerous occasions early. However, it was not until a free kick in the 52nd minute that they got on the board. Junior defender
Brianna Yarber sent the ball into the box, just missing junior forward
Brittany Barr on a diving header, instead finding Wikfors for the open goal to give the Eagles the 1-0 advantage.
In the 74th minute, Biola added an insurance goal as junior
Zoe Zappas lifted the into the box to Barr, who quickly tapped the ball to David setting up a shot that just went over the head over the Academy of Arts' goalkeeper, Solveig Barnes.
The Urban Knights' best chance came in the closing minutes of the contest as Carmela Doerr blasted a shot off a free kick right into the diving arms of Frushon. However, Doerr was whistled for offsides, negating the save.
The home-opening victory improves Biola's record to 11-4-3 all-time in such games. The Eagles are now 4-0-2 in the last six season.
Biola returns to action on Thursday (Sept. 10), hosting Holy Names University (Calif.) in a non-conference match at 7:00 p.m. on Al Barbour Field.
