LA MIRADA --- On a night honoring five seniors from Biola women's soccer,
Briley Phelps scored four goals and set Division II-era single-match records for goals and points as Biola women's soccer defeated Westmont 6-1 on Saturday at Al Barbour Field.
"Honestly, I was just focused on playing our game and trying to secure an important win for our season," Phelps said.
Phelps found the net in the sixth minute, finishing off assists from
Hayden Gehring and
Taylor Bradshaw to open the scoring.
Adrielle Salvador doubled the lead in the 24th minute on a Gehring assist. Phelps converted a penalty kick in the 34th minute to send the Eagles into halftime with a 3-0 advantage.
Biola extended its lead early in the second half.
Ella Grannis scored an unassisted goal in the 57th minute, her first of the season. Westmont answered 19 seconds later, but Phelps converted another penalty kick moments after to make it 5-1. She added her fourth goal in the 63rd minute to complete the scoring.
"It was just such a special night, especially being able to celebrate with my teammates on senior night as a group," Phelps said.
Phelps finished with 11 shots, including five on goal, and eight points. Her season goal total now stands at 12, a Division II-era single-season record. She leads the PacWest in points and shares the conference lead in goals. Her four goals and eight points each broke the previous Division II-era single-match records of three goals and seven points, respectively.
"The records are super cool, but I just love this group of girls and I love every moment we've gotten to share this season and hoping that we can make it to Hawaii," Phelps said.
Biola outshot Westmont 25-9 and put 12 shots on goal to the Warriors' two.
Sami Robinson played the first half in goal and made one save, while
Laura Brennan played the second half and allowed the lone goal.
"The Lord has continued to bless our team with this season of harvest and we are truly grateful," stated Head Coach
Brett Croft. "Tonight was about celebrating Riley, Cassidy, Jade, Briley, and Ella, and they all contributed at a high level tonight. Briley was an unstoppable force tonight leading the charge for us once again. Our groups focus is to stay humble and hungry, and to continue to take things one game at a time."
The Eagles improved to 8-4-2 overall and 5-1-1 in PacWest play, while Westmont fell to 2-9-3 overall and 1-6-0 in conference play.
