BOX SCORE
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola used a season-best 12 aces and a balanced offensive attack to cruise past The Master's College 25-18, 25-15, 25-13 in a GSAC match on Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium.
The victory snaps a mini two-match losing streak and moves the No. 19-ranked Eagles to 11-4 overall and to 2-2 in conference play. The Mustangs fall to 9-5 on the season and to 1-3 in the GSAC.
Biola's 12 aces were the most in a match since the NAIA Tournament last season when the Eagles had 12 against Madonna University (Mich.). Sophomore
Christian Woodruff led the way with six on the night with junior
Lindsay Dietzen and freshman
Rachel Buckley each adding three.
Senior
Kelsey Christoferson recorded eight kills and committed just one error in 16 swings in her first match as an outside hitter. Christoferson was moved over as the Eagles played another shorthanded match due to numerous injuries and sick players.
Freshman
Nicolette Mather also had eight kills and one error while Buckley had a great hitting night with seven kills on one error in nine swings (.667 attack percentage).
Biola had a tough time getting going in the first set, committing numerous errors and not being able to pull away from the Mustangs until late in the set. Leading 17-16, the Eagles finally started to pull away. After a service error gave the ball back to Biola, Woodruff took over. She served five-straight points including three via service ace to put the Eagles up 23-17. After the teams exchanged service errors, Mather closed out the set with a big kill to give Biola a 1-0 advantage in the match.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 12-4 lead in the second set, extended it to 16-6 and cruised to an easy 25-15 win. The Eagles hit .417 in the set, committing just two errors.
However, they did one better in the third set, hitting .480 to close things out. Once again Biola got off to a hot start, leading 15-6 early on. The Master's would close the gap to seven at 18-11, but the Eagles scored seven of the final nine points to wrap things up.
Freshman setter Justine Shoneveld recorded a match-high 26 assists and added two kills and three blocks for the Eagles. Junior middle blocker
Tavea Hampton had five kills and five blocks.
Three players had four kills each for The Master's, which hit .000 for the match.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday (Sept. 23), hosting No. 10 Azusa Pacific University
