BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior Megann Alberts scored 15 points in her final game at Chase Gymnasium and sophomore Megan Jackson added 13 points to lead Biola to a 95-48 victory over Hope International on Monday night in its final regular-season game.

The Eagles wrap up the regular season with a 19-10 record and finish tied for fifth in the conference at 11-9. The Royals end a tough season at 1-27 and 0-20 in the GSAC.

Biola finished tied in fifth place with The Master's College at 11-9 in the GSAC standings and will travel to face the No. 4 seed Azusa Pacific University in the first round of the GSAC playoffs on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles received the fifth seed in the tournament after all tiebreakers had been exhausted leading to a vote by the GSAC coaches. It is believed to be the first time in conference history that has happened.

The Eagles dominated just about all facets of the game, shooting 58.5 percent from the field, out-rebounding the Royals by a 47-22 margin and draining 10 three-pointers in the contest. Four Biola players reached double-figures and all but one of the 12 Eagle players scored in the game.

Biola got off to bit of a slow start, though they lead throughout the game. The Eagles held a slim 8-7 advantage just over four minutes in before going on a 9-0 run to take a 10-point lead. The Royals stayed within nine points through the 10-minute mark, but Biola rattled off a 10-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 35-18 lead with 5:40 to go in the half. The Eagles continued to add to the lead and ended the half with a 51-24 advantage.

The second half was more of the same as Biola quickly stretched the lead to 33 points thanks to six-straight points to start things out and would not look back.

Alberts, who was honored after the game, scored 15 points in just over 25 minutes, hitting 7-of-8 shots after starting out the game by missing her first five. She added six rebounds, a block and an assist in her final home game for Biola.

Jackson had a strong game as well. The sophomore, who opened the night with an incredible duet of the National Anthem with fellow sophomore Jessilyn Conicelli, poured in a career-high 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Conicelli, who played just 20 minutes, scored seven points and had eight rebounds, two steals, two assists and a blocked shot.

Junior Chelsea De Luca and sophomore Jennifer French each contributed 11 points for the Eagles. Freshman guard Emily Drews was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field with each shot coming from beyond the three-point line to finish with nine points.

The victory gives the Eagles 19 wins to end the regular season, matching the second-highest win total by a Biola women's basketball team since the 1989-90 season. The total is especially impressive as it matches the win total for the Eagles in the last two seasons combined. Should Biola win its first-round GSAC playoff game, it would achieve 20 wins for just the third time in 19 seasons.

The win combined with the victory by the Biola men's team also snaps a dubious streak as Monday marked the first time both the men's and women's basketball teams swept a conference doubleheader at home this season. The streak actually dates back four games into last season when the two teams both beat Cal Baptist at Chase Gymnasium on Feb. 16, 2008.

The Eagles will be making their second-straight trip to the GSAC Tournament after missing the playoffs the three previous seasons and their 12th trip since joining the conference in 1994-95. Biola had advanced past the first-round just three times in their previous 11 chances, the last coming in 2001-02 where the Eagles advance to the conference finals.

Biola opens the 2009 GSAC tournament at arch-rival Azusa Pacific. The Cougars, who are ranked No. 19 in the penultimate NAIA National Poll, wrapped up the fourth spot in the conference with an impressive 76-55 win over No. 17 Westmont on Monday night. Azusa Pacific has won three-straight games after dropping its previous three and closed out the regular season with a 21-9 record.

The two teams split the regular-season games between the two, each winning on its home floor. The Eagles held a 20-point lead early in the second half before Azusa Pacific stormed back and won by two when the teams met in Azusa on Feb. 10--the last time the teams battled. The game ended as the Cougars were awarded a pair of controversial free throws with the score tied at 66-66 and less than one second remaining.

The playoff game is set to tip-off on Wednesday (Mar. 4) at 7:30 p.m. at the Felix Event Center. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and are available the Event Center box office the night of the game.
