BOX SCORE
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior Megann Alberts matched a season-high with 29 points including 21 in the pivotal first half to lead No. 19 Biola to a 72-51 win over Fresno Pacific in a GSAC game on Tuesday night at Chase Gymnasium.
The Eagles improve to 14-6 on the season and move to 7-5 in GSAC play while snapping a frustrating three-game home GSAC losing streak. The Eagles pick up just their second GSAC home victory in five games. The Sunbirds drop to 9-10 overall and to 5-7 in conference action.
Alberts, who has now scored 20-plus points in three of her last five games, connected on 12-of-18 shots from the field in the game and added nine rebounds, one block and a steal. She scored 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting in the first half and trailed Fresno 22-21 after 20 minutes of play.
Alberts was one of four players to reach double-figures in the game with sophomore forward Jessilyn Conicelli scoring 14 points and adding 11 rebounds. Sophomore forward Jennifer French added 14 points and nine rebounds while freshman guard Charrise Reece scored 11.
Biola got off to a hot start in the game, shooting 62 percent (18-of-29) in the first half. The Eagles led from start to finish, but the game was close through the first 10 minutes. Biola led 20-18 with 9:23 to play in the half after Fresno's Michele Rebozzi draining a long three-pointer. But the Eagles began to put some distance between the visiting side, going on a 21-4 run to end the half with Alberts scoring 11 and Conicelli adding six points during the run. Biola held a commanding 41-22 lead heading to the locker room.
In the second half, the Eagles held on to the double-digit lead, but not without a bit of a scare. Fresno Pacific put together a strong stretch of play midway through the half, going on a run to close the gap to 11 on a long three-pointer by Rebozzi which made it 53-42 with 9:54 to go. But Biola quickly stretch the lead back to 20 with a quick 9-0 run and never looked back.
The Eagles were able to exact a measure of revenge after the Sunbirds handed Biola its lone GSAC road loss of the season thus far. Fresno Pacific held the Eagles to under 38 percent shooting in that game. However, the second time around, Biola shot over 53 percent despite not hitting a three-pointer for the second time this year. However, three-pointers were not necessarily needed after opening up such a big lead in the first half.
Biola now travels to Irvine for a big road test at No. 2 Vanguard University on Saturday (Feb. 7) at 5:30 p.m. The Eagles had a late lead over the Lions, only to see it disappear in the final few minutes in a three-point loss when the two battled in La Mirada earlier this season.
