BOX SCORE
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Sophomore Jennifer French scored 20 points to lead five Biola players in double-digits as the Eagles overcame a halftime deficit with a big second half in a 83-66 win over Concordia in a GSAC game on Saturday night.
The win moves Biola to 17-9 on the season and its 9-8 record in conference play moves the Eagles back into a tie for fourth place overall. Concordia drops to 12-13 overall and to 5-12 in the GSAC on the heels of its 12th loss in the last 16 games.
French had another strong night, recording 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field including four three-pointers. Senior forward Megann Alberts and freshman guard Charrise Reece added 15 points each. Reece was just shy of a triple-double in the game, pulling down nine rebounds and adding eight assists.
Freshman guard Emily Drews scored a season-high 14 points on the strength of 3-for-4 shooting from three-point land while sophomore forward Jessilyn Conicelli added 13 points and 12 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season.
Concordia was in control of the first half as the visitors hit 52 percent from the field to build a 40-33 lead at the half. But in the second half, it was Biola in control.
Biola opened the half with a 7-0 run over the first four minutes to knot the score at 40-40. A three-point play by Kayanna Nichols ended the run and put Concordia back on top. But French responded with a three-pointer followed on the next possession by a pair of free throws to give Biola its first lead in over 11 minutes.
Four minutes later, Concordia took the lead back at 48-47 with a short 5-0 run. But the one-point lead proved to be the final one of the game for Concordia as Conicelli hit a turnaround jumper in the paint to take back the lead on the next possession and Biola did not look back.
Biola broke a 56-56 tie with an 11-2 run highlighted by a pair of three-pointers by Drews including an impressive bankshot on a three from the far corner. After a couple of free throws on the other end, Biola's lead would reach 10 points with a three-pointer by Reece with 3:08 left on the clock. When all was said and done, Biola would finish the game on 27-10 run over the final 7:24 of the game to pick up the much-needed victory.
The game really was a tale of two halves for Concordia, which shot just 22 percent in the second half, finishing the game at just under 36 percent. Meanwhile, Biola was a bit more consistent, shooting 49 percent in the game and 52 percent in the pivotal second half.
The key for the home side was from beyond the arc, where Biola hit seven three-pointers in the second half on nine attempts from outside while holding Concordia to just 1-of-11 from three-point range.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday (Feb. 24), hosting The Master's College in a GSAC clash at 5:30 p.m. at Chase Gymnasium.
