LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the second-straight game, Biola did not allow a field goal over the first 10 minutes of the game, built a big lead and cruised to an easy win, this time defeated San Diego Christian College 58-41 in a GSAC game on Saturday night.
The Eagles improve to 16-8 overall and to 8-7 in GSAC play, regaining sole possession of fifth place in the conference and moving back to within one game of fourth-place Azusa Pacific. The Hawks drop to 4-19 on the season and to 1-14 in the conference.
Biola jumped out to a quick lead in this game thanks in large part to strong play on defense. The Eagles held San Diego Christian without a field goal through the first 11 minutes of the game as the visitors went 0-for-15 from the field to start things off. On the offensive end, Biola overcame a bit of a slow start to build a 22-0 lead.
The Hawks snapped the drought with a three-pointer by Crystal Quinones and wound up outscoring the Eagles 19-9 the rest of the half to close to just 12 at halftime.
In the second half, Biola quickly stretched the lead back to 18 with six early points and had it up to 20 midway through the half. A three-pointer as time expired would end the game with Biola holding a 17-point advantage and snapping a two-game GSAC losing streak.
Senior Megann Alberts scored 13 points to lead the Eagles, adding seven rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocks. Freshman guard Charrise Reece add 11 points and had five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Leading the way for the Hawks was Dorchella James, who had 15 points, five assists and five rebounds.
Biola did not have a particularly good shooting night, hitting just 37 percent from the field. However, strong defense by the Eagles helped hold San Diego Christian to just 20 percent shooting with seven of their 13 made field goals coming from beyond the three-point line.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday (Feb. 17), traveling to Westmont College for a big GSAC battle against the 14th-ranked Warriors. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
