LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Sophomore Jennifer French scored a game-high 13 points to lead Biola to an 80-41 non-conference win over Chapman University on Thursday night. The game was part of the national "Pink Zone" campaign and the two teams helped raise over $1,200 to help support Breast Cancer research.
The Eagles snapped a two-game losing streak with the victory and improve to 15-8 on the season while the Panthers fall to 16-8.
Biola jumped out to an early lead in the game thanks to some impressive shooting and strong defense. Over the first 10 minutes of the game, Biola outscored Chapman 16-2, holding the Panthers without a field goal. Chapman connected on its first of six first-half three-pointers to snap the drought with 9:39 to go in the half.
The Eagles would take a halftime lead of 44-23 thanks to 58 percent shooting from the field. In the second half, Biola continued its strong play and cruised to the easy victory.
French led all scorers with 13 points while senior Megann Alberts added 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Christina Barclay had 10 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
However, the game took a back seat to the real purpose of the night which was to raise awareness and money to help support breast cancer research. The evening was part of the WBCA "Pink Zone" campaign as the Eagles and Panthers were part of over 1,250 schools across the country participating in games to help raise money for the cause this weekend. Fans donated over $1,200 during the evening which will be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
Formerly known as Think Pink, the 2009 Pink Zone will runs from Feb. 12-22. Over 1,000 schools have already signed up to help promote awareness and encourage fans to contribute to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
The Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research, in collaboration with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, launched the initiative in 2007. It honors former NC State women's coach Kay Yow, who died in January after a decades-long fight with cancer. Yow worked alongside Jim Valvano at NC State before he succumbed to cancer in 1993. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987.
Special Edition T-shirts from Thursday's game are still available for a $10 donation to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. Donations are also still being accepted. For more information, contact Biola women's basketball coach Ken Crawford at (562) 777-4082.
Biola returns to the court on Saturday (Feb. 14), hosting San Diego Christian College in a GSAC game scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m.
