BOX SCORE
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Junior forward
Sam David headed home the match-winner in the 84th minute to give Biola a 1-0 upset victory over No. 23 Cal State San Marcos in a non-conference match on Friday night at Al Barbour Field.
The Eagles improve to 5-1-1 with the win and remain a perfect 5-0 at home this season. The Cougars, ranked No. 23 in the latest NAIA National Poll, fall to 3-4-3 overall.
David scored the game-winner late in a tight contest which was battled at midfield for the most part. David headed home the winner off a great cross from senior defender
Amy Atkinson with just over six minutes remaining in the contest.
The game featured just 12 total shots with each side having six including three on goal. Biola had a great chance to get on the board first in the 41st minute as senior midfielder
Kahlie Reinecke gathered a loose ball in the box, turned and beat the keeper with a low shot only to see it hit off the post and rattle out.
Cal State San Marcos had a chance of their own bounce off the woodwork just three minutes later as Arielle Cohen rattled one off the crossbard in the 44th minute.
Neither team had a strong scoring chance in the second half as the teams battled at midfield. However, with time winding down, the Eagles connected on a series of passes culminating in Atkinson's lofted shot into the box which found David.
After having her shutout out streak snapped on Tuesday against No. 1 Cal Baptist, sophomore netminder
Erin Frushon came up big on Friday, making three saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season.
The 5-1-1 record is the Eagles best start to a season since 2002 when Biola went 14-0-1 to start the season en route to a berth in the NAIA Quarterfinals.
Biola returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 7), traveling to Santa Barbara to face Westmont College in a GSAC match at 3:00 p.m.
