Biola Rolls to 85-54 Win at Concordia

Conicelli again paces Eagles with 19 points

IRVINE, Calif. --- Forward Jessilyn Conicelli continued her steller sophomore campaign, scoring 19 points to lead No. 18 Biola to an 85-54 win over Concordia University in a GSAC game on Saturday night in at the Concordia Arena in Irvine.

Biola rebounds from a tough loss on Tuesday and improves to 11-4 on the season and to 4-3 in GSAC play. Concordia drops to 10-5 on the heels of its fourth loss in its last five contests, and falls to 3-4 in the conference.

Conicelli, who is averaging a double-double with 12.6 points and 11.6 rebounds per game, scored a game-high 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting and added eight rebounds and six assists to lead four Biola players in double-digits.

Freshman guard Charrise Reece and senior forward Megann Alberts each added 13 points while sophomore guard Jennifer French contributed 12.

Biola dominated the game from the start, opening up on a 10-0 run before Concordia scored its first field goal over four minutes in. CUI closed the gap to six at 12-6, but Biola then exploded for 16-straight points over the next six minutes to take a commanding 28-6 lead with five minutes to go before the half. The visitors would keep up the pressure and took a 44-21 lead to the locker room.

After the two teams exchanged baskets through the first 10 minutes of the second half before Biola started to pull away. BU stretched the lead to as many as 33 late in the second half before settling for the 31-point victory.

The story again came in the paint for Biola, which outscored Concordia 56-16 in the paint and held a 44-35 rebounding edge. Biola shot 52 percent from the field in the contest, the fourth time this season the team shot over fifty percent. Biola hit 51.4 percent in the first half and came back with a 53.1 percent shooting performance in the second. On defense, the team held Concordia to just 31.7 percent shooting and forced 24 turnovers which Biola converted into 29 points. 

French played well in her return from an ankle sprain which kept her out of the last two games. She played 24 minutes in the contest and was 5-for-9 from the field, adding five rebounds and four steals. Freshman guard Lauren Gustafson also played well off the bench, scoring on all four shots she attempted for nine points and five rebounds.

Nicole Fu scored 15 points off the bench to pace Concordia with Lauren Sahli adding nine.

Biola travels up north to take on The Master's College on Tuesday (Jan. 20) for a GSAC game in Santa Clarita. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. at Bross Gymnasium.
