Kelsey Mitchell recorded 14 kills with no errors for Biola

BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior Brittany Wing recorded a match-high 16 kills and junior Kelsey Mitchell added 14 without committing an error to lead No. 5 Biola to a 30-26, 30-19, 30-24 sweep over No. 7 Pt. Loma Nazarene in a GSAC match on Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles improve to 11-0 on the year and remain a perfect 4-0 in conference play while the Sea Lions fall to 8-3 and 2-2 in the GSAC.

Biola used a balanced attack to down Point Loma with Wing and Mitchell leading the charge. Junior outside hitter Jessica Buffum added 12 kills for the Eagles, who were playing without their best hitter–junior Meghan Warkentin–who sat out with a minor leg injury.

Biola started out with a 9-4 lead in game one before Point Loma slowly edged back in, eventually tying the match at 22-22. At 24-24, the Eagles took advantage of a pair of attack errors by the Sea Lions to go up 27-24 and won the match on a service ace by senior defensive specialist Caroline Rutenbar.

The second game started out with the teams exchanging points until Biola broke a 12-12 tie by going on a 9-1 run and cruising to the easy 30-19 win.

The Eagles jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead to start game three but Point Loma refused to go quietly into the night. The Sea Lions rallied back and pulled within one at 18-17 on a service ace by Amanda Bevens. However, two attack errors by PLNU and a kill by Buffum put the Eagles back up by four and the Sea Lions would get no closer.

Wing finished a strong evening recording 16 kills, seven digs, four blocks and four assists. Mitchell provided the punch from the outside with 14 kills in 27 attacks all without committing an error for a total hitting percentage of .519.

Natalie Acklin led the Sea Lions with 10 kills while PLNU's leading hitter Melissa Boer was held to a season-low eight kills while hitting just -.026 on the night.

Overall, Biola outhit Point Loma .259 to .134 and had 55 kills to the Sea Lions' 40.

Biola hits the road for a GSAC match on Tuesday (Sept. 18) at Hope International University. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
