John Stiver joined Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist's coaching staff at the start of the 2015-16 campaign. He returned to the Biola bench after playing for the Eagles back in the 1980s. He helped Biola to a 54-10 overall record from 1983-85 and led Biola to the 1983-84 NCCAA National Championship.
Stiver's name sits atop the Eagles' record book for his prolific free-throw shooting. He has the single-season numbers for free throw shooting, recording .932 FT % in 1983-84
The big man played at Biola in the 1980s and came back to school in 2000 to finish off his degree, a BA in History. His father, Dick, attended Biola from 1956-59. John also attended, and played at, UTSA and Florida International.
After his collegiate career he went on to play professionally at Clube de Ipe in Jales, Brazil and on the Spirit Express and Crossfire Ministry. His basketball career began with a high school career that saw him twice named All-CIF and make McDonald's All-American honorable mention in 1982. His high school squad was CIF runner-up in 1981.
He and his wife, Catherine have three sons in their 20s, Benjamin, Nikolas and Vitaly. Outside of coaching, Stiver's main interests are traveling and sports. He'll have more time to pursue those now, retiring from his primary profession in December 2018. Stiver resides in Fullerton, California.
