Fang Finds the Difference

Biola opens PacWest play with a 1-0 shutout over Chaminade

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola women's soccer team opened PacWest play with a 1-0 win over Chaminade on Saturday afternoon at Al Barbour Field.

Gissel Fang provided the difference for the Eagles, scoring the lone goal of the match in the 32nd minute. Briley Phelps and Hayden Gehring each picked up an assist on the game-winning goal.

Biola came out aggressive offensively, putting three shots on goal within the opening six minutes. Phelps, Jade Alverio and Devan Carman each tested Chaminade goalkeeper who kept the match scoreless early.

The Eagles finally broke through at the 32nd minute. Fang, who entered the match as a substitute in the 15th minute, found the back of the net off assists from Phelps and Gehring to give Biola a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Fang's first of the season and eventually stood as the game-winner.

Biola carried its one-goal advantage into halftime despite Chaminade generating six first-half corner kicks. Sami Robinson handled the opening 45 minutes in goal for the Eagles, making one save to keep the Silverswords off the board.

Laura Brennan took over in goal to begin the second half and was tested as Chaminade searched for an equalizer. Brennan made her first save in the 53rd minute before adding stops in the 72nd and 75th minutes. She finished with three saves in 45 minutes of action, combining with Robinson for the shutout.

The Eagles continued to create opportunities on the other end. Phelps put a shot on frame in the 64th minute and forced three more saves from the Silverswords goalkeeper over the final three minutes as Biola looked for an insurance goal.

Phelps led Biola's attack with six shots, including four on goal, while Gehring added three attempts and Alverio finished with two. The Eagles totaled 13 shots with seven on frame, while Chaminade finished with 15 shots and four on goal.

Biola's defense held firm through the final whistle to secure the clean sheet and its first PacWest victory of the season. The win improved the Eagles to 4-3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The Eagles will host the Hawaii Pacific Sharks on Monday, September 28th at 4 p.m.
