Golden Eagles Get The First

Biola falls victim to a string of two-run singles in lopsided loss.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Concordia University Irvine scored in five of seven innings and held Biola to just four hits in a 10–1 victory in game one of a PacWest doubleheader at Freedom Field.

The Eagles celebrated Senior Day in front of a great crowd of fans, but it was the first-place Golden Eagles from Concordia who controlled the action from the start. Kacie Gossett tossed a complete game for the visitors, scattering four hits and one unearned run while striking out one on just 84 pitches.

Concordia struck first in the opening frame for a 2–0 lead.

Biola got a runner aboard in their part of the first when Lizzie Byer was hit by a pitch and Alexa Sheard singled to second base, but a pair of fielder's choices ended the threat without a run.

CUI got a leadoff triple to start the third inning, and her teammate brought her home with a sacrifice fly to left to push the margin to 3–0.

Biola scratched across its lone run in the fourth inning. Mikala Huskey reached on a throwing error by Gossett on a bunt, then moved to second on an Ariana Banos single to shortstop. Kennadie Tsue followed with a single down the left-field line to drive in Huskey and cut the deficit to 3–1.

Concordia answered in the fifth when a two-run single made it 5–1.

The Eagles turned to Madeline Granados in the circle to begin the sixth, but the visitors kept the pressure on, ultimately extending their lead to 8-1 and making Head Coach Kristin Halte go back to Kayla Bousquette.

Concordia tacked on two more in the seventh on a two-run single to left to set the final margin at 10–1.

Bousquette took the loss in the circle, falling to 15-4. She allowed seven runs — six earned — on nine hits over 6.1 innings, walking four and striking out two.

Alexa Medley Sheard led Biola with a pair of singles, while Banos and Tsue each added a hit. The Eagles managed just four hits on the afternoon.

With the loss, Biola moved to 32–18 on the season and 25–7 in PacWest play. The second game of this Saturday senior day doubleheader is critical for the Eagles as a CUI win would clinch the regular season title.
