Explosive Fourth Give Eagles The Edge

Whitman adds to DII era record with 32nd home run

LA MIRADA --- Homecoming continued as the Biola baseball team took on the visiting Cal State San Marcos Cougars for their final game of a four game series. Aided by six runs across two innings, Biola took home the win, 7-1.

"I'm really proud of how the guys continue to bounce back and show resilience even after 3 tough losses," stated head coach Jesse Rodgers. "Cube pounded the strike zone and was lights out. Ashton Pass was on base all day, and Whit broke it open with a huge home run. We were able to get some momentum going into the conference schedule."

After Jacob Talbott posted a solid first inning, Aiden Cube came into the game for the start of the second and pitched four solid innings and struck out seven.

The Cougars secured their only run of the game during the top of the first inning, while the Eagles dominated the diamond.

With one run on the board for both Biola and Cal State San Marcos, the scoreboard lit up during the bottom of fourth. Luke Caruso started the rally that made the Eagles known. After an Adiel Torres walk, James Whitman drove one deep to center field for a three run homer securing the lead, 4-1. The power didn't stop with Whitman, Johnny Tewinkle took on the deepest part of the yard with a homer of his own to center field.

During the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles displayed great plate discipline as Ashton Pass got on via a walk then advanced on a wild pitch. Kevin Villegas singled to right field. With runners on the corners and Pass crossed home plate on a wild pitch. With bases loaded, Whitman fielder's choice allowed Villegas to score as the Eagles ended the eventful fifth with a 7-1 lead.

Noe Novella and Dylan Alanis shut down the Cougar offense allowing a combined one hit and striking out three total.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 4-4 overall and take the final game against CSUSM. Biola will hit the road and take on Fresno Pacific in Dan Martin Stadium with first pitch at 2 p.m. on Feb 13.
