Late Heroics Sink Eagles

Ballantyne spins six strong, but Sunbirds walk it off

FRESNO, Calif. --- The Biola baseball team faced the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds for game two of a four game series. 

After surrendering a  first inning run, Luke Ballantyne dealt five shutout innings. In the second, he struck out the side. In the third, Ballantyne pitched around a jam. Through the following three innings, he allowed only one hit and struck out three. He finished with six strikeouts through six innings. 

In the top half of the sixth, Biola found themselves with the bases loaded and only one out. Nick Madole started the inning off with a walk. Jonny Tewinkle followed with a base hit and James Whitman reached on a walk of his own. Ty Cowley drew a five pitch walk to bring in Madole and tied the game at one. 

Noe Novella came in with the bases loaded and no one out. Novella caught a liner back to him and threw over to third for a double play. He would strike out the following hitter and keep it all tied up. 

In the top of the seventh inning, Kevin Villegas drew a one out walk, advanced to second on a groundout and then stole third. The Eagles would be held scoreless in the inning. In the bottom of the seventh, FPU had runners on first and second no outs and grounded into a double play. The winning run would cross home on an RBI single, handing Biola their second loss in as many games.

The Eagles move to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play. They will face the Sunbirds tomorrow (2/14) for the final two games, beginning at 12 p.m.
