Grider & Goldsmith Spark Biola in Road Battle at APU

Big nights from Laney Grider & Jaycee Goldsmith fueled Biola’s effort at APU.

AZUSA, Calif. --- The Biola women's basketball team kept pace with Azusa Pacific, but would ultimately fall 84–74 to the Cougars on Thursday night.

The Eagles had a strong start, building an 19–13 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Biola executed right away, shooting 9-for-15 in the field (60 field goal percentage) while holding APU to a shooting percentage of 33.3. Laney Grider, Hanne Nybo, and Jaycee Goldsmith scored points for BU. Grider led the trio with seven points and Nybo and Goldsmith totaled six.

Azusa Pacific responded in the second quarter with a shift in momentum and more consistent scoring, edging Biola 19–16 in the frame to take a 38–35 lead into halftime. The quarter featured multiple swings, with Grider continuing to apply pressure downhill and Grace Moyers knocking down timely threes to keep the Eagles within striking distance. APU, however, found answers late in the half and carried a narrow three-point edge into the break.

Biola returned from halftime with energy, matching Azusa Pacific shot for shot in the third quarter, though the Cougars kept a slim lead. APU outscored Biola 17–16 in the period and took a 55–51 lead into the fourth. Grider stayed aggressive on offensive, leading Biola with nine points in the frame. Still, APU hit key shots and free throws at pivotal moments to keep the Eagles from flipping the score.

The fourth quarter turned into a high-scoring, physical finish, with both teams repeatedly getting to the line and exchanging big possessions. Biola made multiple pushes — highlighted by Nybo finishing inside, Moyers connecting from three, and Goldsmith converting late at the line and from deep — but Azusa Pacific continued to answer with timely scoring. The Cougars' execution down the stretch, combined with late free throws, ultimately sealed the result.

Grider led Biola's attack with a career-high of 28 points. She went 9-for-16 in the field, 2-for-4 beyond the arc and was a percent 8-for-8 at the line.

Goldsmith recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Nybo and Moyers also scored in the double digits. Nybo added 17 points with a string of strong finishes in the paint. Moyers knocked down key threes to keep Biola within range during the final minutes.

Alyssa Kubo led the gym with four steals.

The Eagles fell 5-6 overall and  2-4 in the PacWest Conference while APU improves 9-4 and 5-1 in conference play. Next up for Biola is Point Loma on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Golden Gymnasium.
