Grider, Nybo Pace Eagles in Road Setback at PLNU

Grider, Nybo powered Biola’s offense in loss at Point Loma.

SAN DIEGO, Calif.--- The Biola women's basketball team dropped a 76–64 decision to Point Loma on Tuesday night at Golden Gymnasium.

The Eagles battled through the opening quarter but ended up trailing 21–14. Biola briefly took an 8–7 lead on a layup from Alyssa Kubo before Point Loma answered with a six-point run to regain control. Laney Grider paced BU's offense with five points. Hanne Nybo and Kubo each added four points, and Danya Dykstra knocked down a three. 

The Eagles worked to cut into the deficit in the second quarter, pulling within one or two possessions on multiple occasions before halftime. Biola's second quarter was their most successful offensive showing of the night. They shot 53.8 percent in the field while limiting the Sea Lions to 28.6 percent.

Biola had an aggressive approach to the third quarter, recording their most fouls of the night in the frame. The Sea Lions capitalized on these additional scoring opportunities and ended up out-scoring Biola 16-13. Nine of Point Loma's 16 points were earned from the free throw line.

Biola continued to fight in the final frame, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter. Grider's opening bucket brought the Eagles within six but PLNU would answer with steady scoring. The Sea Lions ended up out-scoring Biola 25-21 which solidified their 76-64 win over BU. Grider led Biola's fourth quarter scoring effort with eight points. Nybo scored five points, Dykstra had three, Jaycee Goldsmith contributed two and MiaGrace Delahoz added a point in what was a great final frame effort for Biola.

Grider had another great night, leading all scorers with 23 points. She shot 8-for-14 from the field, 3-for-7 beyond the arc and added six rebounds and five assists. Grider is the second-highest scorer in the PacWest, averaging 17 points per game.

Nybo added 13 points on an efficient 5-for-8 shooting performance. Goldsmith contributed six points and had a team-high of seven rebounds. Danya Dykstra chipped in a season-high of nine points from three three-pointers.

Biola moved to 5–7 overall and 2-5 in the PacWest while PLNU improved 12-4 and 8-2 in the conference. The Eagles play next at home against Westmont College on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 5:30 p.m.
