Late Rally Falls Short in Season Opener

Biola drops a one-goal game to Cal State Fullerton at the Titan Invitational

FULLERTON, Calif. --- The Biola women's water polo team opened the season with a 6-5 loss in their first of four games at the Titan Invitational. 

In the first period, CSUF got on the board first with back-to-back goals. Annabella Rapp started the scoring for Biola with two powerplay goals, both assisted by Destiny Moreno, as the Eagles knotted the score up at two apiece after one period. 

The second period saw better defense as both teams conceded a combined one goal. Fernanda Luna recorded six saves in the first half, keeping the Eagles within striking distance. Into the halftime break, the Titans led the Eagles, 3-2.

In the third frame, an early five-meter goal followed by an even strength goal put CSUF up 5-2. After Alyah Ibarra drew an exclusion, Moreno scored a key powerplay goal to bring BU back to within two.

Into the final frame, Biola trailed 5-3. The two teams traded early powerplay goals. Gwendolyn Pidd scored on a five-meter with just over two minutes left, bringing BU to within one. Luna came up big with consecutive saves, giving Biola the last shot of the game. Unable to score, the Eagles fell to the Titans 6-5.

Offensively, Rapp and Moreno led BU in scoring, combining for five points. Ibarra, Pidd and Stephanie Rodriguez all contributed one point apiece. Luna saved 10 total shots, finishing with a .625 save percentage.

Biola will play against CSU Monterey Bay at 5 p.m. later today.
