Fernanda Luna scores late as Biola falls to CSUMB in extra time

Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. --- The Biola women's water polo team took to the pool for their second game of the day. The Eagles took on WWPA opponent CSU Monterey Bay in a non-conference game, losing by a final score of 12-13.

CSUMB opened the scoring before Biola responded with back-to-back goals from Gwendolyn Pidd and Ava LoBue. The Otters evened the score, but LoBue struck again to put the Eagles back in front. CSUMB answered with consecutive goals, before Mia Mulhall found the net for Biola's fourth score of the period. The Otters closed the quarter with another goal, holding a 5-4 advantage going into the second frame.

The second period saw stellar defense and goalkeeping. Although Stephanie Rodriguez scored for BU in the final minute, the Otters found the back of the net, maintaining a one-goal lead into the halftime break. 

Out of the break, both teams traded powerplay goals. Annabella Rapp scored her first goal of the match to keep the Eagles within one after the Otters scored again. 

CSUMB scored the first goal halfway through the fourth quarter. Destiny Moreno answered quickly with her first goal of the game. Back-to-back powerplay goals from the Otters put them back up by two. After goals from Rapp and Rodriguez in the final two minutes, Fernanda Luna, the goalkeeper for Biola scored at the buzzer to tie it at 11 apiece, sending the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Otters scored twice in the final minute of the first to take the lead. Pidd scored in the second overtime frame with 16 seconds left but the lone goal wasn't enough.

Offensively, LoBue led all Biola scorers with 3 goals. Rodriguez, Rapp and Pidd each posted two goals, while Moreno and Mulhall contributed solo goals. Aliyah Ibarra chipped in two assists. Defensively, Clara McKee and Luna combined for 14 saves. McKee finished with a .333 save percentage, while Luna finished with a .611 save percentage. 

Biola will play two more games tomorrow, starting with Long Beach State at 11 a.m.
