Eagles Push Occidental to Overtime in 12–11 Heartbreaker

Biola had its chances but Occidental found the strikes to steal one away from the Eagles.

REDLANDS, Calif. --- Biola Men's Water Polo went the distance in a back-and-forth thriller against Occidental (2-7) on Saturday morning at the Thompson Aquatic Center. Despite multiple lead changes and standout individual efforts, the Eagles (2-5) came up just short in a 12–11 overtime loss.

The contest was tight from the opening whistle. Gavin McKenzie and Nick Murray each scored twice in the first half, helping Biola trade goals with the Tigers through a 5–5 tie. Ivan Tkach added a go-ahead goal late in the second, but Occidental equalized before the break.

The third period saw Biola surge ahead behind power-play conversions from Levi Bengelink and Murray, plus another strike from McKenzie. Murray would go on to finish with a game-high five goals on seven shots, including a key equalizer in the final overtime frame.

McKenzie also had a standout day, scoring four goals on seven shots, and providing steady offensive leadership. Bengelink tallied a goal and a team-high three assists, while contributing on both ends.

In goal, Joshua Dachenhausen went to work, turning away 14 shots to keep Biola in it. The Eagles dominated the sprints, going 6-for-6, and racked up 10 steals as a team.

Despite a final exchange of goals in the overtime periods—including strikes from McKenzie and Murray—Occidental had the final say with a goal at 2:01 in the second extra frame.

Biola will look to wrap up the weekend on a high note, facing Cal Lutheran at 3:40 pm.
