Going the Distance

All five sets were used on Friday afternoon but Alaska Fairbanks slipped by the Eagles in a nail-biter.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska --- Hannah Hanson powered Biola with 14 kills on a .282 attack percentage to go along with 25 assists and 12 digs, recording a double-double and finishing with a team-high 18.0 points. Despite her efforts, the Eagles came up just short on Friday afternoon, falling in five sets to Alaska Fairbanks (15–25, 25–22, 24–26, 25–20, 12–15) on day two of the Seawolf Invitational.

The Eagles stumbled in the opening frame as errors piled up and Fairbanks raced ahead for a 25–15 decision. Biola responded in the second with one of its most complete sets of the young season. The Eagles hit .282 as a team, with Hanson and Madison Moore finding their rhythm with four kills apiece. Three of the four final points came from Hanson kills, while Juliana Van Ommering connected on the set-winning strike for a 25-22 finish.

The third set was a tug-of-war that featured eight ties and five lead changes. Biola surged ahead late to earn set point at 24–23, but Fairbanks strung together the final three points to steal the frame 26–24. With their backs against the wall, the Eagles answered in the fourth. Kapustova and Moore led a balanced attack, and Biola's block came alive to produce timely stops in a 25–20 win.

In the decisive fifth, the teams traded blows until the Nanooks pulled ahead 12–8. Biola clawed back to within one behind a service ace from Lexi Lambert, but Fairbanks closed out the set 15–12 to secure the match.

Moore added nine kills on a .250 clip and chipped in five digs, while Kapustova provided eight kills, one ace, and five block assists for 12.0 points. Van Ommering joined the attack with 10 kills and 13 digs, and libero Bri Bellfi was outstanding defensively with a match-high 33 digs.

Biola (0–2) finished the match with 53 kills, 13 blocks, and seven service aces while holding Fairbanks (5-1) to a .149 hitting percentage.

The Eagles continue tournament play on Friday night, battling Minot State at 6:00 pm PT.
