Swinging in a New Year

2025 is underway, as Biola opened the new season in Alaska.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska --- Biola volleyball opened its 2025 season Thursday night on the road against Alaska Anchorage, dropping a four-set match (25–23, 16–25, 18–25, 17–25) in the Seawolf Invitational. BU pulled off 42 kills and was led by Madison Moore with 14.

The Eagles came out strong, taking a back-and-forth first frame behind steady production from Moore and Hannah Hanson. Biola rallied late in the set, erasing a two-point deficit before capitalizing on an Anchorage error to secure the opener, 25–23.

The second set saw Biola unable to maintain an early advantage as a string of miscues allowed Anchorage to build separation. The Eagles dropped the frame 25–16, and momentum stayed with the Seawolves into the third. Biola battled to a 13–13 tie behind production from Juliana Van Ommering and Kendall Vandertuig, but another UAA push put the set out of reach in a 25–18 decision. The fourth followed a similar pattern, with Biola hanging close early before Anchorage pulled away midway through to close the match, 25–17.

Madison Moore paced Biola's attack with 14 kills on 38 swings to go along with three digs and a block for a team-high 15.0 points. Van Ommering followed with nine kills, one ace, and 13 digs for 11.5 points. Vandertuig added 11 kills at a .241 clip while contributing two block assists and 12.0 points overall. Hanson was effective all around the court, handing out 21 assists, picking up 12 digs, and adding eight kills of her own at a .368 hitting percentage to finish with 9.5 points. Libero Bri Bellfi anchored the back row with 20 digs, and Lambert chipped in 13 assists and nine digs.

As a team, the Eagles finished with 42 kills and nine total blocks but were held to a .101 hitting percentage. Biola's strongest offensive set came in the opener, where it hit .222, before Anchorage's defense limited them to .056, .111, and -.032 the rest of the way.

Biola (0–1) continues its season-opening trip in Anchorage on Friday, battling in a double feature against Alaska Fairbanks at 1:00 pm PT and Minot State at 6:00 pm PT.
