A Winning Wednesday

Biola bounced back quickly for a four-set win on Wednesday, taking three-straight sets after falling in the first.

LA MIRADA --- Biola volleyball (8-3) shrugged off a slow start in its PacWest opener, storming back after dropping the first set to take down Hawaii Pacific (4-9) 3-1 (20–25, 25–17, 25–19, 25–18) inside Chase Gymnasium.

The Wednesday night win in La Mirada kept the Eagles perfect at home in 2025 at 6-0.

The Sharks caught Biola off guard in the opener, capitalizing on miscues late in a 25-20 frame. Nine unforced errors hurt the Eagles, but the team did land 12 kills from six different players.

But the Eagles quickly regrouped and found their rhythm in the second. "We weren't playing Biola Volleyball," said Hannah Guzzetti. "The energy was low, so we just wanted to come out and have fun in the second set." That shift was clear in the 25-17 response, as Guzzetti, Kendall Vandertuig and Payton Tully each landed at least four kills in the set. Simi Kapustova connected three-straight service aces, which stretched the lead for an easy finish.

The third belonged to Biola's balanced offense. Vandertuig, Tully, and Emma Fairbairn fueled a 10-5 start, while Vandergui and Guzzetti teamed up at the net to slow down the Sharks. A Vandertuig kill capped a 25-19 set that gave the Eagles control.

Biola's cleanest frame came in the fourth, without a single attack error and a .469 hitting percentage. Vandertuig and Hanson each had key swings early, and the Eagles used a 12–6 run midway through to close out the match. "Such a fun night!" Guzzetti said after delivering nine kills and three blocks in the win.

Kendall Vandertuig paced the Eagles with 18 kills and 10 digs, while hitting .293 and adding two block assists. Hanson put together an all-around line with eight kills, 24 assists, 13 digs, and two solo blocks. Tully added 11 kills on a .348 clip, and Fairbairn chipped in six kills on .417 hitting. Kapustova finished with four kills and four aces, while Bri Bellfi anchored the defense with 19 digs. Ashlyn Beebe also stepped into the back row and delivered an ace for BU.

As a team, Biola hit .304 with nine aces and six total blocks, while holding HPU to a .189 hitting percentage.

Biola is now set to face Hawaii Hilo on Friday at 5:00 pm in Chase Gymnasium for its first official PacWest contest.
