Eagles Start Strong but Fall to Hawaii Hilo

Biola started fast on Friday but could not hold on against the visiting Vulcans.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles' home winning streak came to an end Friday night, as Biola dropped its PacWest opener to Hawaii Hilo in four sets (25-16, 19-25, 23-25, 19-25) inside Chase Gymnasium.

Biola came out sharp in the opening frame, racing to a 16-11 lead behind kills from Kendall Vandertuig and Payton Tully, then stretching it to 21-14 before closing the set 25-16. Lexi Lambert ran a crisp offense, notching nine assists while the BU offense tacked on 15 kills at a .324 clip.

Momentum shifted in set two. Despite an early 7-5 edge, Biola gave up a 16-9 run that put Hawaii Hilo in control. The Eagles tried to claw back late with points from Hanson and Vandertuig, but the Vulcans closed it out 25-19 to even the match.

The third was the backbreaker, as the Vulcans came from behind to steal the set. Biola built a 20-15 cushion following a Bri Bellfi ace, but Hilo stormed back with a late push, taking the final five rallies to sneak away 25-23.

In the fourth, Biola matched Hilo point for point to a 13-13 tie before errors proved costly. The Vulcans capitalized on a 6-1 run after the break, and despite late kills from Hanson, Tully, and Moore, the Eagles fell 25-19 to end the night.

Hanson led Biola with a double-double of 15 kills and 15 assists while hitting .325, adding two blocks and seven digs. Tully tallied 14 kills at a .333 clip, while Vandertuig finished with 12 kills, 12 digs, and four block assists. Bri Bellfi, once again, led the back row with 20 digs, while Lambert dished out a team-high 25 assists.

As a team, Biola totaled 54 kills on .203 hitting with seven blocks, matching Hawaii Hilo's efficiency.

The Eagles will stay at home for their next contest, taking on Azusa Pacific on Wednesday at 6:00 pm.
