Biola Drops Nail-Biter at No. 24 Pomona-Pitzer

A bout against the top DIII squad went down to the wire, as the Sagehens narrowly beat the Eagles on Wednesday night.

CLAREMONT, Calif. --- The fourth quarter proved to be the difference on Wednesday evening. Biola (9-15) hit the road to take on No. 24 Pomona-Pitzer (18-10) and fell by just one goal to the Sagehens, 12-11.

The Eagles put together strong spurts throughout the midweek contest to build a lead. Three three-goal rallies were spread between the three first quarters for Biola.

It was a four-headed attack from Biola with four Eagles logging multiple points. Veralie Naranjo, Lizzy Birch, and Destiny Moreno each tallied two scores to help propel the offense. Naranjo also tied for the team-high in assists, joining Ava LoBue with two helpers.

Christina Cervantes was a big force on the defense, securing four steals in the bout.

In the third quarter, Biola netted three goals in two minutes to open up its biggest lead of the day at 10-7. Pomona-Pitzer responded in the final two minutes of the stanza, notching two goals of their own to pull back within striking distance. Alicia Fregoso gave BU more breathing room at the buzzer, coming out of the cage to give the Eagles an 11-9 edge, heading into the fourth.

The fourth and final quarter belonged to Pomona-Pitzer. The host squad held BU scoreless for all eight minutes. The Sagehens scored two goals near the halfway point but took the lead with 1:15 on the clock with a five-meter penalty shot. Biola had two opportunities to tie the game and force overtime but neither found the back of the net.

In addition to her goal in the third, Fregoso nabbed nine saves and a steal on Wednesday.

Biola will be back in the pool on Saturday at Concordia at 1:30 pm.
