Seniors Strike at Splash

The Biola Women’s Water Polo seniors posted 12 goals in a big 18-3 senior day victory on Saturday against the UC Merced Bobcats.

LA MIRADA --- The Biola Eagles (9-14) hosted the UC Merced Bobcats (5-21) at Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatic Center on Saturday where the Eagles celebrated their senior day with a big 18-3 win over the Bobcats.

The Eagles began the day by recognizing Chloe McKay, Ava LoBue, Christina Cervantes, Lizzy Birch, Veralie Naranjo and Damaris Kientz during senior ceremonies before they jumped in the pool and played in their final game at Biola.

Birch got things started early as she put the Eagles on the board in the first 30 seconds of the game with an unassisted goal. Naranjo then fired one into the back of the net before the Bobcats posted their only goal of the quarter. Stephanie Rodriguez, Myah Ibarra and LoBue each tacked one on to Biola's name while Naranjo logged another two goals, putting the Eagles up 7-1 after the first quarter.

The Bobcats defense stepped up in the second frame only allowing one goal, but their offense could not catch up with the Eagles as they only found the back of the net one more time. Birch recorded her second goal of the day on a five-meter penalty shot, extending the Eagles lead to 8-2 going into the half.

Biola matched the first quarter outcome in the third, outscoring the Bobcats 7-1 once again. Cervantes had a big third quarter as she put up three goals and an assist, contributing to her big senior day win. Destiny Moreno, Alyah Ibarra and Gwendolyn Pidd each recorded a goal for the Eagles along with Birch firing in her third of the day, inching closer to a career milestone. Biola still held a big 15-3 lead heading into the final quarter.

Birch opened up the quarter with yet another goal, followed by one to the back of the net from Salma Orozco. Birch sealed the win in the final 20 seconds of the game with her fifth goal of the day and capped off her senior day with her 100th career goal.

Biola's 18 goals was the outcome of a team effort, but the seniors stood out in their big game. Birch led the Eagles with five goals, two assists and seven steals while Cervantes posted three goals, one assist and three steals. Naranjo also put up three goals, recorded an assist on two goals, drew three exclusions and had a steal. LoBue recorded one goal, two assists and one steal.

The senior keeper, McKay, defended the goal for the entire game and recorded a career-high 13 saves while only allowing three to get past her. McKay also recorded two assists on her big day.

The Eagles are back in action on April 9th at 5 pm at Pomona-Pitzer.
